Inspired by William Hogarth's series of engravings "A Rake's Progress" (1733-35), which Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) first saw in 1947 at the Chicago Art Institute, he and his librettists depict the gradual decline of the young libertine Tom Rakewell in eight scenes after. He leaves his beloved Anne Trulove to follow the mysterious stranger Nick Shadow to London to take up his inheritance. There he lives a life of licentiousness, squandering all his money and marrying the bearded and garrulous carnival sensation Baba the Turk. After a year, his assistant Nick Shadow - none other than the devil himself - demands his reward: Tom's soul. One final deck of cards will decide Rakewell's fate...


During the composition of his first and only opera, Stravinsky was primarily concerned with Mozart's "Così fan tutte" and skilfully incorporated echoes of Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Rossini and Verdi. The result is a neoclassical style pasticcio full of tonal harmonies, virtuoso coloratura all'Italian and lyrical melodies

Intendant Bernhard F. Loges, together with the set designer Ana Tasic and the general manager Daniel Carter, will stage this brilliant and socially critical parable about true values ​​apart from fame and money with analytical and satirical acumen.

Inspiriert von William Hogarths Kupferstichfolge „A Rake’s Progress“ (1733-35), die Igor Strawinsky (1882-1971) das erste Mal 1947 im Chicago Art Institute sah, zeichnen er und seine Librettisten in acht Bildern den schrittweisen Niedergang des jungen Libertins Tom Rakewell nach. Dieser verlässt seine Geliebte Anne Trulove, um dem geheimnisvollen Fremden Nick Shadow für den Antritt seines Erbes nach London zu folgen. Dort führt er ein zügelloses Leben, verprasst sein gesamtes Geld und heiratet die bärtige und geschwätzige Jahrmarktssensation Baba the Turk. Nach einem Jahr verlangt sein Gehilfe Nick Shadow – niemand anderes als der Teufel selbst – seinen Lohn: Toms Seele. Ein letztes Kartenspiel soll Rakewells Schicksal entscheiden …


Während der Komposition seiner ersten und einzigen Oper beschäftigt sich Strawinsky vor allem mit Mozarts „Così fan tutte“ und arbeitet geschickt Anklänge von Monteverdi über Händel, Mozart, Rossini bis Verdi mit ein. So entsteht ein neoklassizistisches Stil-Pasticcio voll tonaler Harmonien, virtuoser Koloraturen all’italiana und lyrischer Melodien.


Intendant Bernhard F. Loges wird gemeinsam mit der Ausstatterin Ana Tasic und dem GMD Daniel Carter diese brillante und gesellschaftskritische Parabel über wahre Werte abseits von Ruhm und Geld mit analytisch-satirischem Scharfsinn auf die Bühne bringen.
