Tom Rakewell is an English Faust, with a pinch of Don Giovanni and a dash of Tannhauser. Nick Shadow is the name of his »shadow«, who promises him an existence without ties and money worries. Ann Trulove, however, remains in unwavering love for Tom, it also takes him to London's whorehouses, into the arms of the fairground tranny Türkenbaba or, at the end of his wild life, to a madhouse. The moral of the story is proclaimed in the final hymn: "The devil finds his work in idle hands, hearts and souls."

An American by choice since 1939, Igor Stravinsky was inspired by the copper engraving series of the same name by the English painter William Hogarth for his opera The Rake's Progress. Librettist WH Auden invented the humorous and moralistic plot, including the figure of the Mephistophelic tempter Shadow. Musically, Mozart and Handel were the inspiration for the opera, which marks the high point of Stravinsky's neoclassical creative phase.

Ann Trulove aber hält in unbeirrbarer Liebe zu Tom, verschlägt es ihn auch in Londons Freudenhäuser, in die Arme der Jahrmarkts-Transe Türkenbaba oder, am Ende seines wüsten Lebenslaufes, ins Irrenhaus. Die Moral von der Geschicht’ verkündet der Schlussgesang: »Bei müßigen Händen, Herzen und Seelen findet der Teufel sein Werk.«

Seit 1939 Wahlamerikaner, ließ sich Igor Strawinsky von der gleichnamigen Kupferstichserie des englischen Malers William Hogarth zu seiner Oper »The Rake’s Progress« (»Die Karriere eines Wüstlings«) inspirieren. Librettist W. H. Auden erfand die humorvoll-moralistische Handlung samt der Figur des mephistophelischen Versuchers Shadow. Musikalisch standen Mozart und Händel für die Oper Pate, die den Höhepunkt von Strawinskys neoklassizistischer Schaffensphase markiert.
