Ópera en tres actos y un epílogo, con música de Ígor Stravinski (1882-1971) y libreto de W. H. Auden (1907-1973) y Chester Kallman (1921-1975), inspirada en la serie de pinturas y grabados de William Hogarth (1697-1764), titulada The Rake´s Progress. Se estrenó en Venecia, el 11 de septiembre de 1951.

Tom Rakewell, joven enamorado de Anne Trulove, desea contraer matrimonio con ésta. Su vida, sin embargo, cambia radicalmente cuando conoce a Nick Shadow, quien le informa que un tío desconocido recién fallecido le ha heredado una fortuna. El joven deja a su amada y se va a Londres con Shadow, éste se ha ofrecido a ser su criado y ayudarle a resolver el tema de la herencia, sin salario, hasta que haya transcurrido un año y un día. Ya en Londres, Tom se entrega a una vida de aventuras, diversión y desenfreno, todo ello organizado por su criado. Al transcurrir el año y un día, Shadow revela su verdadera identidad y exige su salario: el alma de Rakewell. Propone jugar una partida de cartas para decidir el destino de su “patrón”, desafío que Tom acepta y gana. Shadow, furioso, se venga de él haciéndole perder la razón.

Tom Rakewell, a young man in love with Anne Trulove, wishes to marry her. His life, however, changes radically when he meets Nick Shadow, who informs him that a recently deceased unknown uncle has inherited a fortune. The young man leaves his beloved and goes to London with Shadow, who has offered to be his servant and help him resolve the issue of the inheritance, without salary, until a year and a day has passed. Already in London, Tom gives himself to a life of adventures, fun and debauchery, all organized by his servant. As the year and a day pass, Shadow reveals his true identity and demands his wages: Rakewell's soul. He proposes to play a game of cards to decide the fate of his "patron", a challenge that Tom accepts and wins. Shadow, furious, takes revenge on him making him lose his mind.
