Genji Monogatari Echoes of Distant Love

Operatic adaptation of The Tale of Genji, Genji Monogatari – Echoes of Distant Love was composed in the early 90s by the Japanese Yoritsune Matsudaïra. The latter, fascinated by the vocality of the soprano Yumi Nara, decided, after the creation of three first songs, to write a mono-opera in two acts, for one voice and an instrumental ensemble. With deference to his muse, Matsudaira will dedicate the work to her with the distance that befits the protagonists of the imperial courts: “In homage to Yumi Nara, with great artistic sympathy.” 

Pioneer of contemporary Japanese music - he participated in the founding of the Japanese Society for Contemporary Music in 1937, which he would chair twenty years later, Matsudaïra (1907-2001), a great friend of Messiaen, steeped in the French music of Debussy never ceased to build bridges between Japan and the West. Until mixing, at the end of the Second World War, gagaku (traditional court music) with serialism. And, if he only uses one voice for this work, he connects it, depending on the songs, with instruments such as the flute, percussion or koto .

Directed by Yoshi Oida, also an actor and who worked on the Mahabharata with Peter Brook, Genji Monogatari – Echoes of Distant Love plunges us into the imperial court of the 11th century by following the life and loves of Prince Genji. Portrait of the aristocratic society of the time, Genji, son of the emperor and a favourite, will experience social ascent then decline and exile, all phases of his career punctuated by the presence of a woman and presented in this opera in an anti-chronological order.

Adaptation opératique du Dit du Genji, Genji Monogatari – Échos d’amour lointains a été composé au début des années 90 par le Japonais Yoritsune Matsudaïra. Ce dernier, fasciné par la vocalité de la soprano Yumi Nara, décide, après la création de trois premiers chants, d’écrire un mono-opéra en deux actes, pour une voix et un ensemble instrumental. Déférence gardée envers sa muse, Matsudaira lui dédicacera l'œuvre avec la distance qui sied aux protagonistes des cours impériales : « En hommage à Yumi Nara, avec beaucoup de sympathie artistique.» 

Pionnier de la musique contemporaine nippone - il participe à la fondation de la Société japonaise pour la musique contemporaine en 1937, qu’il présidera vingt ans plus tard, Matsudaïra (1907-2001), grand ami de Messiaen, imprégné par la musique française de Debussy, n’aura de cesse de construire des ponts entre le Japon et l’Occident. Jusqu’à mélanger, au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le gagaku (musique de cour traditionnelle) avec le sérialisme. Et, s’il n’utilise qu’une voix pour cette œuvre, il la met en lien, selon les chants, avec des instruments comme la flûte, les percussions ou le koto.

Mis en scène par Yoshi Oida, par ailleurs comédien et qui a travaillé sur le Mahabharata avec Peter Brook, Genji Monogatari – Echos d’amour lointains nous plonge dans la cour impériale du XIe siècle en suivant la vie et les amours du prince Genji. Portrait de la société aristocratique de l’époque, Genji, fils de l’empereur et d’une favorite, connaîtra ascension sociale puis déchéance et exil, toutes phases de son parcours rythmées par la présence d’une femme et présentées dans cet opéra dans un ordre antichronologique.
