Victime d'un complot organisé par ses sœurs et la sournoise Babarikha, la Tsarine Militrissa est répudiée par le Tsar Saltane, persuadé à tort que son épouse a donné naissance à un monstre alors qu'il était parti à la guerre. La malheureuse est condamnée à être jetée dans un tonneau livré à la mer mais elle parvient miraculeusement saine et sauve sur l'île magique de Buyan où elle élève seule le Tsarévitch Gvidone. Devenu un valeureux jeune homme, celui-ci sauve une Princesse-Cygne des griffes d'un magicien. Avec son aide, il devient le souverain d'une puissante cité avant de partir à la découverte de ses origines, avec l'espoir de rencontrer enfin ce père qui l'a rejeté.
De tous les grands compositeurs russes du XIXᵉ siècle, Rimski-Korsakov se distingue par son attachement aux légendes de son pays natal dont il a su magnifier la poésie par sa maîtrise absolue de l'art de l'orchestration. Le metteur en scène Dmitri Tcherniakov, génial ambassadeur du théâtre russe, s'empare avec une rare sensibilité et un sens aigu de la psychologie de ce conte musical inspiré par une œuvre de Pouchkine. Il signe un spectacle poignant, centré sur la relation inconditionnelle qui unit une mère à son enfant, et porté par des animations vidéo oniriques, en interaction permanente avec les chanteurs. Une ode à l'enfance et à la différence présentée dans le cadre du festival Arsmondo Slave.

Plotted against by her sisters and the devious Babarikha, the Tsarista Militrissa is rejected by the Tsar Saltan when he is wrongly informed that his wife gave birth to a monster instead of a son while he is away at war. The wretched girl and her child are placed in a barrel and thrown into the sea, but they miraculously survive and wash up safe and sound on the island of Bunyan, where she raises Tsarevich Gvidon alone. He grows into a valiant young man and saves a swan-princess from a magician. With her help, he is hailed as the prince of a powerful city before he heads off to discover his origin story and hopefully find the father who abandoned him.
Of all the great Russian composers of the nineteenth century, Rimski-Korsakov stands out for his attachment to the legends of his native land whose poetry he beautifully evoked through his sheer mastery of orchestration. A brilliant ambassador of Russian theater, stage director Dmitri Tcherniakov grasps with a remarkable sensibility and acute understanding the psychology at play in this musical tale inspired by a Pushkin poem. The result is a stirring production revolving around the unconditional bonds between mother and child, augmented by whimsical animated films in constant interaction with the singers. An ode to childhood and otherness presented as part of the Arsmondo Slavic Festival.
