‘The Flight of the Bumblebee’ is one of those instantly recognisable musical hits that sometimes stick in your mind for days. But what few people know is that it comes from The Tale of Tsar Saltan, where it is a symphonic intermezzo that ends the first scene of Act Three. With its agitated rhythms and patterns of rapidly descending and ascending scales, it describes how Prince Gvidon, whom the Princess-Swan has turned into a bumblebee, flies across the sea hoping to meet his father.

Several weeks before the premiere, the Symphony Orchestra of La Monnaie and its Musical Director Alain Altinoglu are already offering you a foretaste.

THREE JEALOUS WOMEN BREAK UP THE TSARINA’S FAMILY. 
Trois sœurs aspirent à épouser le tsar Saltane. C’est la plus jeune d’entre elles, Militrissa, qui est choisie par le tsar, charmé par sa modestie et sa beauté. Elle est bientôt enceinte de leur premier enfant. Rongées par la jalousie, les deux autres sœurs complotent avec la vieille Babarikha pour se venger de leur cadette. Elles font croire à Saltane, parti à la guerre, que Militrissa a donné naissance à un monstre. Furieux, le tsar ordonne d’enfermer sa femme et son fils dans un tonneau et de les jeter à la mer…   
   
S’inspirant de ce conte, Nikolaï Rimski-Korsakov signe l’une des partitions les plus chatoyantes du répertoire. Sa musique regorge de mélodies imagées, dont l’incomparable « Vol du Bourdon », et bénéficie d’une orchestration qui met en valeur chaque instrument. En 2019, la Monnaie présentait une production bouleversante de cet opéra, mise en scène par Dmitri Tcherniakov. Des séquences animées y dépeignent le monde imaginaire d’un jeune garçon tentant de surmonter le divorce de ses parents. Un spectacle inoubliable qui fait son grand retour en décembre, sous la baguette de Timur Zangiev.

THREE JEALOUS WOMEN BREAK UP THE TSARINA'S FAMILY. 
Three sisters aspire to marry Tsar Saltane. It is the youngest of them, Militrissa, who is chosen by the tsar, charmed by her modesty and her beauty. She is soon pregnant with their first child. Consumed by jealousy, the two other sisters plot with old Babarikha to take revenge on their younger sister. They make Saltane, who has gone to war, believe that Militrissa has given birth to a monster. Furious, the tsar ordered his wife and son to be locked in a barrel and thrown into the sea...   
   
Inspired by this tale, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov created one of the most shimmering scores in the repertoire. His music is full of colorful melodies, including the incomparable “ Vol du Bourdon”, and benefits from an orchestration that highlights each instrument. In 2019, La Monnaie presented a moving production of this opera, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Animated sequences depict the imaginary world of a young boy trying to overcome his parents' divorce. An unforgettable show which makes its comeback in December, under the baton of Timur Zangiev.
