For første gang optræder den store amerikanske dirigent Michael Tilson Thomas i DR Koncerthuset. Han har været chefdirigent for bl.a. San Francisco Symfonikerne, men har kun få gange kunnet opleves i Danmark. Til denne koncert har han valgt at opføre et af de største værker, der findes: Gustav Mahlers Symfoni nr. 3

”En symfoni skal rumme hele verden”, sagde Mahler, og det passer på hans 3. Symfoni, der kræver 200 musikere og sangere. Emnet for symfonien er så omfattende, som det overhovedet kan være: Menneskets eksistens på Jorden. I kæmpeværket samler Mahlers tanker sig til en overvældende hyldest til livet.

Rejsen er lang, og den er overvældende. Symfonien har seks satser, der tilsammen varer næsten to timer. En stor, følelsesmæssig rutsjetur, der spænder fra naiv glæde til angst og frygt. Men mod slutningen slutter sangerne sig til orkestret, og de fastslår med ord af filosoffen Nietzsche: ”Smerten siger: Dø – men glæden vil den dybe evighed!”

For the first time, the great American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas will appear in the DR Koncerthuset. He has been chief conductor of, among others, The San Francisco Symphony, but has only been able to experience it in Denmark a few times. For this concert, he has chosen to perform one of the greatest works in existence: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3

" A symphony must contain the whole world ", said Mahler, and this is true of his 3rd Symphony, which requires 200 musicians and singers. The subject of the symphony is as comprehensive as it can possibly be: Man's existence on Earth. In the giant work, Mahler's thoughts come together in an overwhelming tribute to life.

The journey is long and it is overwhelming. The symphony has six movements that together last almost two hours. A big, emotional roller coaster that ranges from naive joy to anxiety and fear. But towards the end, the singers join the orchestra, and they state with the words of the philosopher Nietzsche: " The pain says: Die - but the joy wants the deep eternity!" "
