Inspired by the play by Victorien Sardou that Puccini had seen in 1889 performed by the great Sarah Bernhardt, Tosca is a major work in the repertoire. The drama of passion is exploited in an unprecedented way by a composer driven by the recent successes of the tragic Manon Lescaut and La Bohème . Inspirée par la pièce de Victorien Sardou que Puccini avait vue en 1889 interprétée par la grande Sarah Bernhardt, Tosca est une œuvre majeure du répertoire. Le drame passionnel est exploité de manière inouïe par un compositeur porté par les succès récents des tragiques Manon Lescaut et La Bohème. À l’orée du XXe siècle, le compositeur veut offrir à la scène un effet de miroir de l’âme en intégrant à son chef-d’œuvre des scènes violentes où les voix et l’orchestre rugissent les passions humaines avec une force décuplée. Il faudra, au public de la création romaine, quelques temps pour digérer l’inéluctable rapidité tragique de l’opéra.
