When the famous opera singer Floria Tosca takes the stage, she has the men's attention to herself. Based on the French sensational drama by Victorien Sardou, Puccini portrays the singer as the only woman between men whose looks, desires and domination games she is defenselessly exposed to. After the republic was smashed, the head of the secret service Scarpia caused bloody police terror in Rome. He not only persecutes the Republican and political prisoner Angelotti, but also his helper and Tosca's lover, Mario Cavaradossi, whom he arrests and tortures. Desire and vengeance mix and the popular singer becomes a plaything, entangled in a web of blackmail, abuse and even murder and suicide. The figure of the unscrupulous secret service chief appeared in the early 20th Century still as a desolate caricature of the papal state despotism, today it stands for one of the many paradoxes of democratic rule: a secret department of the state authority has the official mandate to systematically do things that are constitutionally forbidden in order to protect the prevailing principles of order. The fact that people continue to be monitored, interrogated and tortured continue to lead to secret service scandals, revelations and cover-ups to this day.
