Because the painter Cavaradossi helped the politically persecuted Angelotti to escape, he himself became the focus of state power. Scarpia uses Cavaradossi's lover to learn the whereabouts of the escapee. It is the famous singer Tosca that the police chief himself desires. He forces her to hear the screams of her tortured husband and her steadfastness shatters. Scarpia offers Tosca Cavaradossi's pardon in exchange for her body. She agrees and is given a pass, but before the police chief can approach her, she stabs him. Only Cavaradossi's sham execution still stands in the way of their future together. The action, which is compressed to the essentials, creates an intoxicating tension that relies on an almost cinematic density. The fusion of traditional and around 1900 very modern compositional elements, together with the velvety, shimmering orchestration, creates a very special sound eroticism. The voices and their melodies are in the foreground and create a sophisticated character psychology through their physical expressiveness. Intensive, moving and exciting to the last second, the historical detective piece with a dense musical network offers everything you would expect from a great Italian opera. In-house director Nikolaus Habjan stages a modern psychological thriller with great love for the work and thus creates an unforgettable evening at the opera. Not a good time for love between painter Mario Cavaradossi and singer Floria Tosca. He is a rather naive artist who, for romantic reasons, helps the resistance fighter Angelotti. And the moody Floria Tosca even performs for the new French occupiers. But now the artist couple gets caught up in the machinery of power. And her opponent is Baron Scarpia, a cynic of terror and a brilliant psychologist. He has Cavaradossi tortured in an attempt to blackmail Tosca's devotion. And even when she stabs him in an emotional state, he still triumphs over his death: Cavaradossi's mock execution turns out to be a cruel reality. Giacomo Puccini's opera tears still come as a shock today. Never before had a composer set operatic material to music and illuminated human abysses with such clarity and drasticness. And yet there is hardly a more thrilling work than this TOSCA!
