Tosca is a work from its beginnings meant for a great artist. The original play La Tosca by the French playwright Victorien Sardou was written for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. Floria Tosca became one of her most successful roles and then inspiration for the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. The opera’s creation was not straightforward, its creators many times doubting whether the choice of subject with its complicated political background of the Napoleonic wars was a good one, but the premiere in Rome’s Teatro Costanzi in January 1900 confirmed the dramatic instincts of the composer. The public, although at first shocked by the realism and brutality of some scenes, quickly took this opera full of wonderful and emotive music to its heart. Since its Roman premiere in 1900 this tragic tale of the three main characters – the singer Tosca, the painter Cavaradossi and the police chief Barona Scarpia – has repeatedly pulled in audiences throughout the world. Its passionate music impresses and sends shivers down the spine at the same time. Puccini’s opera contains popular numbers, such as Cavarodossi’s aria “E lucevan le stele” and Tosca’s “Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore”. Tosca quickly won a place among the most performed operas in the world and just like the theatre work was always linked to the great performers, whether Emmy Destinn or Maria Jeritza. Maria Callas is still considered to be the greatest interpreter of this role there has ever been.

Tosca ist ein Werk, das von Anfang an großen Künstlerinnen bestimmt war. Die ursprüngliche Bühnenvorlage La Tosca des französischen Dramatikers Victorien Sardou wurde für die legendäre Schauspielerin Sarah Bernhardt geschrieben. Die Floria Tosca wurde zur ihrer erfolgreichsten Rolle und anschließend zur Inspiration für den italienischen Komponisten Giacomo Puccini. Die Entstehung der Oper war nicht einfach, die Schöpfer waren oft im Zweifel, ob die Wahl des Themas mit einem komplizierten politischen Hintergrund der napoleonischen Kriege glücklich gewesen war, aber die Uraufführung im Januar 1900 im römischen Teatro Costanzi gab dem dramatischen Instinkt des Komponisten recht. Das Publikum, wenn auch zunächst von dem Realismus und der Brutalität einiger Szenen schockiert, nahm diese Oper, voller wunderbarer und emotionaler Musik, schnell an. Seit der Premiere 1900 in Rom hat die tragische Geschichte der drei Hauptpersonen – der Sängerin Tosca, des Malers Cavaradossi und des Polizeichefs Baron Scarpia –  das Publikum der ganzen Welt immer wieder gefesselt. Die leidenschaftliche Musik rührt an und lässt einen zugleich frösteln. Puccinis Oper enthält beliebte Nummern wie Cavaradossis Arie „E lucevan le stelle“ und Toscas „Vissi d’arte, Vissi d’amore“. Tosca hat sich rasch unter den meistaufgeführten Opern der Welt eingereiht, und so wie ihre Bühnenvorlage war sie immer mit großen Sängernamen verbunden, sei es Ema Destinová oder Maria Jeritza. Für die beste Interpretin dieser anspruchsvollen Rolle wird jedoch bis heute die Sopranistin Maria Callas gehalten.

Dva osudy, které se prolnou v jednom okamžiku…

Tosca je opera, která definitivně potvrdila Pucciniho pověst nepřekonatelného tvůrce působivých a efektních melodií. A také tvůrce velkého dramatu. Vznik opery nebyl snadný, tvůrci pochybovali, zda volba námětu s politickým pozadím z napoleonských válek byla šťastná, ale premiéra v římském Teatro Costanzi v lednu roku 1900 dala za pravdu dramatickému instinktu skladatele. Publikum, ač zpočátku šokováno realističností a brutalitou některých scén, tuto operu plnou nádherné a emotivní hudby rychle přijalo za svou.
