Rebellion. Corruption. Jealousy. Torture. A dagger on the way. And most of all, love.  

The ingredients of Puccini's opera could fill a TV series, but takes place during a busy day in Rome in June 1800. When the painter Mario Cavaradossi is suspected of hiding a political fugitive, the sadistic police chief Scarpia sees a chance to trap both the rebel and Cavaradossi's lover, the famous opera singer Floria Tosca. But neither Scarpia nor Tosca spares any means to get what they want.   

The Bergen Festival opens with a concert version of the opera, which contains both poignant duets and some of the world's most famous arias, including  Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore  ("Tosca's prayer") and  É lucevan le stelle  ("The tower aria »).   

Soprano and festival musician Lise Davidsen makes her stage debut here in the title role. Tosca's revolutionary beloved is portrayed by British-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso, and Rome's evil police chief is portrayed by Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.  

During this year's opening performance, the fatal trefoil is on stage together with, among others, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, the Edvard Grieg Choir and the Edvard Grieg Boys' Choir.

The performance is produced by Festspillene i Bergen in collaboration with the Bergen National Opera and the Music Company Harmonien.

Ingrediensene i Puccinis opera kunne fylt en tv-serie, men foregår i løpet av et tett døgn i Roma i juni 1800. Når kunstmaleren Mario Cavaradossi mistenkes for å skjule en politisk rømling, øyner den sadistiske politisjefen Scarpia en sjanse til å fakke både opprøreren og Cavaradossis kjæreste, den berømte operasangeren Floria Tosca. Men hverken Scarpia eller Tosca skyr noen midler for å få det som de vil.   

Festspillene i Bergen åpner med en konsertant versjon av operaen, som inneholder både gripende duetter og noen av verdens mest berømte arier, deriblant Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore («Toscas bønn») og É lucevan le stelle («Tårn-arien»).   

Sopran og festspillmusiker Lise Davidsen gjør her sin scenedebut i tittelrollen. Toscas revolusjonære elskede fremstilles av den britisk-italienske tenoren Freddie De Tommaso, og Romas onde politisjef portretteres av den walisiske bassbarytonen Bryn Terfel.  

Under årets åpningsforestilling står det fatale trekløveret på scenen sammen med blant andre  Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester og Kor, Edvard Grieg Kor og Edvard Grieg Guttekor.

Forestillingen er produsert av Festspillene i Bergen i samarbeid med Bergen Nasjonale Opera og Musikkselskapet Harmonien.
