For this world premiere, dedicated to one of the most important Russian poetesses of the 20th century, the Paris Opera commissioned the composer Bruno Mantovani, entrusted the libretto to Christophe Ghristi and the staging to Nicolas Joel. The book evokes the darkest period of Anna Akhmatova's life, that which took place under the Stalin regime and which was marked, in particular, by the arrest of her son.

In 1859, Frédéric Mistral gave Félibrige, his association for the defense of Occitan culture, his masterpiece: Mirèio or Mireille , a vast epic love poem. Gounod quickly becomes aware of the text and decides to make an opera out of it. He accepted Mistral's invitation to discover Provence and settled in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for a few weeks. The work, created in 1864 at the Théâtre-Lyrique, had a career that was both difficult and glorious. It was constantly modified and distorted. The production directed by Nicolas Joël and directed by Marc Minkowski restores Mireille 's original version and consecrates one of the great masterpieces of French opera.
