Give Me Phoenix Wings To Fly
written in 1997

"I've always been intrigued by the myth of the Phoenix - a bird that immolates in fire and rises up again from its own ashes. It is such a powerful image, and one which is relevant to contemporary life, as we find ourselves balanced somewhat precariously on the brink of disaster. No matter how devastating any single event might be you can still recover and begin again : a do-over. The success is in the attempt and the belief that it is possible to move forward.
 I structured the piece in three movements to cover each phase of the event : fire, bleak devastation, and rebuilding. The first movement is very fast with quick patterns swirling between the three instruments. It ends very loudly on the lowest note of the piano and goes without a break into the second movement. The second movement is very austere, open, and solistes, written without mere. I wanted to evoke the image of a few embers floating into the still air, glowing briefly then dying. The third movement is about rebuilding. The elements of self that survived the devastation, struggle to find one another and emerge from the ashes stronger than before. "

" J'ai toujours été intriguée par le mythe du Phénix, un oiseau qui s'immole par le feu et renaît de ses cendres. C'est une image si puissante, qui s'applique à la vie contemporaine, alors que nous nous trouvons en équilibre précaire au bord du désastre. Quel que soit l'effet dévastateur d'un événement, il est toujours possible de s'en remettre et de recommencer : c'est le re-commencement. Le succès réside dans la tentative et dans la conviction qu'il est possible d'aller de l'avant.
 J'ai structuré la pièce en trois mouvements pour couvrir chaque phase de l'événement : l'incendie, la dévastation sombre et la reconstruction. Le premier mouvement est très rapide avec des motifs rapides tourbillonnant entre les trois instruments. Il se termine très fort sur la note la plus grave du piano et se poursuit sans interruption dans le deuxième mouvement. Le deuxième mouvement est très austère, ouvert, et libre, écrit sans mesure. Je voulais évoquer l'image de quelques braises flottant dans l'air immobile, brillant brièvement puis mourant. Le troisième mouvement parle de reconstruction. Les éléments de soi qui ont survécu à la dévastation luttent pour se retrouver et émerger des cendres plus forts qu'avant.""

Sōra signifie en amérindien : « oiseau qui chante en prenant son envol » . C’est cet envol qui symbolise la carrière du Trio Sōra, composé de Pauline Chenais au piano, Fanny Fheodoroff au violon et Angèle Legasa au violoncelle. L’amour du partage, de la scène, des voyages et du répertoire pour trio avec piano réunit les trois musiciennes, déterminées à défendre, à la manière des quatuors à cordes, la nécessaire existence de cette formation de musique
de chambre.
