Music as the language of peace - this vision unites the young musicians of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, who come from Israel, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Europe. They play together in the orchestra that Daniel Barenboim founded in 1999 together with the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said (1935-2003). With their concerts, the musicians propagate peace between peoples and states.

In 2007 the WEDO was a guest at the Salzburg Festival. This is where this recording was made.

Only a few artists are lucky enough to build up a career as an instrumentalist and conductor at the same time, which enables them to rank among the best in the world in both fields. Born in Buenos Aires in 1942, Daniel Barenboim learned the piano from his parents and gave his first concert at the age of seven. He later attended Igor Markevitch's conducting class in Salzburg and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In the 1950s Daniel Barenboim made his debut as a pianist, went on concert tours and made recordings with famous orchestras and conductors. In the 1960s he concentrated more on conducting, and since then Barenboim has become world-renowned as a concert pianist, chamber musician and conductor in equal measure.
Together with the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said (1935-2003) he founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra; Israeli, Palestinian and Arab musicians play here as a sign of the rapprochement of hostile ethnic groups. Barenboim is involved in both political and cultural matters and has received numerous prizes and awards.
From 2011 to 2015 he was music director of La Scala in Milan. In autumn 2012 he received the Echo Klassik award for his life's work; In 2013 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Daniel Barenboim was named Artist of the Year at the 2013 Classic Brit Awards. On December 1, 2013, Daniel Barenboim received the Marion Dönhoff Prize for international understanding and reconciliation.
