Mid 1850s. Giuseppe Verdi, the author of operas that thunder throughout Europe (Nabucco, Il trovatore, Rigoletto have already been created), is looking for a plot for a new work. It should be something full of contrasts and mood swings, something "that will please my crazy brain," as he writes himself. The plot is with a colleague: the French composer Daniel Aubert (1782-1871) in 1833 composed the opera "Gustav III, or Un ballo in maschera" to the libretto of the most prominent playwright of the era - Eugene Scribe (1791-1861).

Scribe seized on a real event in recent history - the attempted murder of the Swedish king Gustav III at a ball in the opera house he built (the Stockholm Opera to this day keeps the room where the bleeding monarch was brought) in 1792. The king died two weeks later from blood poisoning, the killer was captured and brutally executed. Gustav III was objectionable to many in Sweden - he crushed parliament and achieved absolute power - but Scrib preferred to make the motives for the murder not political, but personal. He invented a beloved for the king - someone else's wife, whose husband, in the heat of jealousy, avenges an honor that was not really abused.

And this is what Verdi needs: the tragedy of people misled by the will of circumstances. In this he is a master - to which all his best works, from La Traviata to Othello, are an example; the manifesto of Verdi's idea that we are all worthy of compassion in the face of things that we cannot influence is an opera with the eloquent title "Force of Destiny".

But before Un ballo in maschera could be appreciated by the audience, he had to endure battles with Italian censors. Not only the regicide looked politically unreliable, but also the scene of witchcraft, and even the fact that the heroine was married. The ordeals of the authors lasted two years, during which they managed to transfer the action of the opera from 18th-century Sweden to 17th-century Pomerania and back to Sweden, but without crowned persons, and at the same time sue the theater, which secretly agreed on a trustworthy libretto in which events take place in the 14th century in Florence. Salvation was the evacuation of heroes to the "land of freedom": the censors did not find fault with the ups and downs of British subjects in colonial America.

Today, Un ballo in maschera is sometimes performed, calling the heroes by the names that Verdi and Somma had in mind: not Richard, but Gustav III, not Rene (Renato), but Count Ankarström. But in both the Swedish and American versions, the names are just conditional masks that do not hide the essence of the story about love and decency, jealousy and duty, voluntary and involuntary self-deception.

In 2021, the performance SATOB became the winner of the Onegin National Opera Prize in three categories: Tatiana Larina for the part of Amelia - Primadonna, Vladislav Sulimsky for the part of Renato - The Guest, the first premiere performance on April 24, 2021 - in the nomination "Composition".

И это – то, что надо для Верди: трагедия людей, введенных в заблуждение волей обстоятельств. В этом он мастер – чему примером все его лучшие работы, от «Травиаты» до «Отелло»; манифест идеи Верди о том, что мы все достойны сострадания перед лицом вещей, на которые не в силах повлиять, – опера с красноречивым названием «Сила судьбы».

Но прежде, чем «Бал-маскарад» смогли оценить зрители, ему пришлось выдержать бои с итальянской цензурой. Политически неблагонадежным выглядело не только цареубийство, но и сцена колдовства, и даже тот факт, что героиня замужем. Мытарства авторов длились два года, за которые они успели перенести действие оперы из Швеции XVIII века в Померанию XVII и обратно в Швецию, но уже без коронованных особ, а заодно засудить театр, тайком от них согласовавший благонадежное либретто, в котором события происходят в XIV веке во Флоренции. Спасением стала эвакуация героев на «землю свободы»: к перипетиям британских подданных в колониальной Америке цензоры придираться не стали.

Сегодня «Бал-маскарад» временами исполняют, называя героев теми именами, которые имели в виду Верди и Сомма: не Ричард, а Густав III, не Рене (Ренато), а граф Анкарстрём. Но и в шведской, и в американской версии имена – лишь условные маски, не скрывающие суть истории о любви и порядочности, ревности и долге, вольном и невольном самообмане.

В 2021 году спектакль САТОБ стал лауреатом Национальной оперной премии «Онегин» в трёх номинациях: Татьяна Ларина за партию Амелии – «Примадонна», Владислав Сулимский за партию Ренато – «Гость», первый премьерный спектакль 24 апреля 2021 – в номинации «Состав».
