Au jeu des trônes, les gagnants d'hier sont souvent les perdants de demain. Alors que le roi de Kasi s'apprête à célébrer la cérémonie du svayamvara au cours de laquelle ses trois filles devront choisir un mari à l'issue d'un tournoi, il néglige d'inviter la famille royale de Hastinapura. L'affront déclenche la colère de la reine-mère Satyavati qui cherche à marier son fils Vichitravirya. Elle envoie en représailles son beau-fils, le chaste guerrier Bhishma, vaincre tous les prétendants et enlever les trois princesses. Seule Amba, réputée pour son esprit de liberté et d'indépendance, refuse de se soumettre. Humiliée par Bhishma, elle jure de provoquer sa perte, dans cette vie ou dans une autre, quitte à devenir un homme et prendre les armes à son tour.
Le Mahabharata est une immense épopée sanscrite consacrée aux aventures guerrières de deux branches d'une même famille royale descendante de l'empereur Bharata, fondateur légendaire de la nation indienne. La poétesse Karthika Naïr en propose une vision inédite et renouvelée, en donnant la parole à ses personnages féminins dont les voix sont habituellement passées sous silence. Le compositeur français Thierry Pécou signe la partition de cette fresque mythique et spirituelle donnée en création mondiale dans une mise en scène de la chorégraphe indienne Shobana Jeyasingh.

In the Game of Thrones, yesterday's winners are often tomorrow's losers. As the king of Kasi prepares to celebrate the svayamvara ceremony during which his three daughters will have to choose a husband after a tournament, he neglects to invite the royal family of Hastinapura. The affront triggers the anger of the queen mother Satyavati who seeks to marry her son Vichitravirya. She sends in retaliation her son-in-law, the chaste warrior Bhishma, to defeat all the suitors and abduct the three princesses. Only Amba, renowned for her spirit of freedom and independence, refuses to submit. Humiliated by Bhishma, she swears to bring about his downfall, in this life or in another, even if it means becoming a man and taking up arms in turn.
The Mahabharatais an immense Sanskrit epic devoted to the warlike adventures of two branches of the same royal family descended from Emperor Bharata, legendary founder of the Indian nation. The poetess Karthika Naïr offers an original and renewed vision, giving voice to her female characters whose voices are usually passed over in silence. The French composer Thierry Pécou signs the score of this mythical and spiritual fresco given in world premiere in a staging by the Indian choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh.
