Leoš Janáček patří k nejvýznamnějším operním skladatelům minulého století. Jeho operní tvorba se stala pevnou součástí světových operních scén. Své současníky Janáček šokoval už výběrem námětů pro své opery.

Nejinak tomu bylo, když se rozhodl zhudebnit hru Karla Čapka Věc Makropulos z roku 1922. Jistě jej lákala tajemná žena Elina Makropulos, dcera dvorního lékaře Rudolfa II. Císař se bál smrti, a tak přikázal svému lékaři, aby pro něj vytvořil elixír věčného mládí a nesmrtelnosti. Když byl přípravek hotov, přikázal císař, aby jej lékař vyzkoušel na své dceři. Tak prožila Elina přes tři sta let dlouhý život. V opeře ji vidíme na konci její existence, unavenou nepřiměřenou délkou života a toužící po smrti, které se zároveň bojí. Filosofické poselství díla – „vy hlupci, vy jste tak šťastni, že tak brzo zemřete“ – je i dnes aktuální. V Plzni bude Věc Makropulos v operní podobě uvedena vůbec poprvé.

Leoš Janáček gehört zu den bedeutendsten Opernkomponisten des vergangenen Jahrhunderts.

Sein Opernschaffen wurde zum festen Bestandteil des Repertoires der Weltopernbühnen. Seine Zeitgenossen schockierte Janáček bereits durch die Auswahl der Themen für seine Opern. Nicht anders war es, als er sich entschied, Karel Čapeks Schauspiel Die Sache Makropulos aus dem Jhre 1922 zu vertonen. Gewiss lockte ihn die geheimnisvolle Frau Elina Makropulos, die Tochter des Leibarztes des Kaisers Rudolf II. Der Kaiser fürchte sich vor dem Tode und so wies er seinen Leibarzt an, für ihn ein Elixier der ewigen Jugend und der Unsterblichkeit zu  brauen. Als das Getränk fertig war, befahl der Kaiser, es an seiner Tochter auszuprobieren.  So verlebte Elina ein über dreihundert Jahre währendes Leben. In der Oper sehen wir sie am Ende ihrer Existenz, des unangemessen langen Lebens müde und sich nach dem Tod sehnend, den sie zugleich fürchtet. Die philosophische Botschaft des Werkes – „Seid nicht töricht, sondern glücklich, dass Ihr so bald sterbt“ – ist auch heute aktuell. In Pilsen wird die Die Sache Makropulos in Form der Oper das erste Mal aufgeführt.

Leoš Janáček belongs to the most respected composers of the previous century. His works are presented by leading opera houses worldwide.

Janáček shocked his contemporaries by the themes he selected for his operas, including the Makropulos Affair, a 1922 text by Karel Čapek.

He was surely attracted by the character of the mysterious Elina Makropulos, a daughter of court physician to Rudolph II. The emperor feared death and ordered his physician to prepare an elixir of eternal youth and immortality. Once the potion was ready the emperor ordered the physician to test it on his daughter Elina who then lived over three hundred years long. In the opera we see Elina at the end of her existence, exhausted by the excessive length of her life and wishing for death that she fears at the same time. The philosophical message of the theme – “you fools, you are so happy to be dying soon” – is still valid today. In Plzeň it will be the first time that the Macropulos Affair will be staged as opera.
