With one of the greatest and at the same time most enigmatic works of the 17th century, the Mannheim Monteverdi cycle enters the third round. In 1610, the great »inventor« of opera wrote a Vespers in honor of the Mother of God Mary, in which large choruses, written according to all the rules of polyphonic counterpoint, alternate with solo movements committed to the modern operatic style. Did Monteverdi want to prove that he was at home in all styles? Was Vespers even intended for use in church? Was it ever played during Monteverdi's lifetime? We do not know it. The spatial effect of the Vespers composed by multiple choirs, the highly dramatic musical structure, which contrasts the individual with the crowd and thus becomes a meditation on the great questions of love, sacrifice and redemption - all of this calls for theatrical implementation, to which the Catalan director Calixto Bieito will find emotional, strong and big theatrical images.
