Completed in 1804, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is the only one in the repertoire whose ‘soloist’ is a piano trio – a chamber genre which at the time was hugely popular, meaning Beethoven was being both highly fashionable and entirely unique. It opens strikingly, on a tiptoe, with an ascending figure from which much of the movement’s ensuing march-like material will be drawn. A brief but expressive central Largo makes much of the cello’s upper registers, before tipping seamlessly into a flashy-yet-elegant finale built around a triple-time Polonaise dance and featuring the work’s only solo cadenza. Originally conceived in honour of Napoleon, Beethoven’s ‘Heroic’ Symphony No. 3 was of an unprecedented length for its 1803 time, and his first without a slow introduction. It opens instead on two choral explosions, then a forwards-pushing theme (with a ‘surprise’ final twist) which will appear throughout the work in various guises. Next come an extended funeral march, and a merrily bucolic Scherzo with a central trio of hunting horns. The finale opens on a shout, proceeds with a whisper – plucked strings with the bass-line of the theme Beethoven then turns into a set of variations – before dancing to a triumphant finish.

Achevé en 1804, le Triple Concerto de Beethoven se distingue en tant que seule œuvre du répertoire où le «soliste» est un trio de piano. Ce genre de musique de chambre étant très vogue à cette époque, il témoigne de la modernité et l’originalité de Beethoven. Le concerto débute de manière saisissante avec un rythme ascendant qui devient l’élément principal de ce mouvement, rappelant une marche dynamique. Un Largo central, bref mais expressif, met à profit les registres supérieurs du violoncelle, avant de basculer sans transition dans un finale à la fois étincelant et raffiné. Ce dernier est construit autour d’une danse polonaise en trois temps et comporte la seule cadence soliste de l’œuvre.

Initialement dédiée à Napoléon, la Symphonie N° 3 «Héroïque» de Beethoven était une première pour l’époque en raison de sa longueur sans précédent et de son absence d’introduction lente. Elle s’ouvre ainsi sur deux éclats de voix, suivis d’un rythme dynamique qui réapparaît tout au long de l’œuvre sous diverses formes, se concluant par un rebondissement final «surprise». Suivent une longue marche funèbre et un scherzo joyeusement bucolique avec un trio central de cors de chasse. Le finale s’ouvre sur un cri, se poursuit par un murmure – cordes pincées avec la ligne de basse du thème que Beethoven transforme ensuite en une série de variations – avant de s’achever par un final triomphal.
