Tabletten schlucken, auf den Ehemann warten, zu Bett gehen: Jahrelang war Violets Alltag so berechenbar wie der Glockenschlag des Uhrturms. Doch eines Nachts, im Wechsel von Mitternacht auf ein Uhr, verliert die Zeit eine Stunde. In der Nacht darauf eine weitere. Für die Bürger der Stadt gibt es kein Halten, Männer zücken ihre Waffen, Schüsse hallen durch die Straßen, Ernten gehen ein, Tiere sterben, Plagen biblischen Ausmaßes ereilen die Gesellschaft. Die Zeit rinnt davon, doch Violet fühlt sich mehr und mehr lebendig. Gekleidet in ein schlammbeschmiertes Nachthemd steht sie in der Küche, wartet auf den Sonnenaufgang und lächelt. Endlich.

Wer die Namen des Komponisten Tom Coult und der Dramatikerin Alice Birch hört, sollte aufhorchen: Diese beiden jungen Kreativen gehören zu den spannendsten Theaterkünstlern derzeit. In »Violet« verbindet sich zum ersten Mal der verspielte und verführerische musikalische Stil Tom Coults – welcher für hochkarätige Auftraggeber wie das BBC Symphony Orchestra komponiert – mit der Sprachkunst und den starken Frauencharakteren Alice Birchs, die unter anderem mit dem Filmdrehbuch zu »Lady Macbeth« von sich reden machte. 2022 wird die Kammeroper »Violet« beim renommierten Aldeburgh Festival in Großbritannien uraufgeführt und gelangt am Theater Ulm erstmals in Deutschland auf die Bühne – ein Musiktheater aus der Gegenwart für die Gegenwart.

»Violet« ist ein Auftragswerk des Music Theatre Wales und von Britten Pears Arts, mit Unterstützung des Theaters Ulm als Mitauftraggeber.
