Koncert NFM Orkiestry Leopoldinum pod dyrekcją Josepha Swensena wypełni muzyka Jeana Sibeliusa oraz Arnolda Schönberga. Należeli oni do najważniejszych kompozytorów działających w pierwszej połowie XX wieku, ale zmierzali w swojej twórczości w zupełnie odmiennych kierunkach. Dwa kwartety smyczkowe ich autorstwa zabrzmią w opracowaniu maestra Swensena.

Kwartet smyczkowy d-moll op. 56 „Voces intimae” Jeana Sibeliusa powstał na przełomie 1908 i 1909 roku. Choć fiński artysta w młodości wielokrotnie pisał krótkie dzieła przeznaczone na kwartet, to wspomniany utwór jest jedynym tego gatunku napisanym przez artystę w dojrzałej fazie twórczości. Podtytuł przetłumaczyć można jako „głosy intymne” lub „głosy wewnętrzne”, co podkreśla introspektywny charakter tej kompozycji i ogromną rolę dialogów pomiędzy poszczególnymi instrumentami. Intrygująca jest też pięcioczęściowa forma tego dzieła: punktem centralnym jest część wolna, Adagio di molto, otoczona przez dwa scherza oraz dwie pełne nerwowej energii części szybkie. Prawykonanie w 1910 roku w Helsinkach zadziwiło krytyków. Jeden z nich pisał: „nie jest to utwór dla szerokiej publiczności, […] jest on ekscentryczny i niezwykły”. Paradoksalnie ów ekscentryzm i wyrazistość stylu Sibeliusa są dzisiaj elementami, które silnie przyciągają do jego muzyki wykonawców i publiczność.

II Kwartet smyczkowy fis-moll op. 10 Arnolda Schönberga jest w zasadzie równolatkiem dzieła Sibeliusa, powstał bowiem w 1908 roku. Austriacki kompozytor napisał je w burzliwym okresie życia. Chociaż zadedykował utwór swojej żonie, Mathilde, nie był to wyraz małżeńskiego szczęścia – kobieta miała wówczas bowiem romans z młodym malarzem Richardem Gerstlem. Sprawa ta miała tragiczny finał. Mathilde zdecydowała się wrócić do męża, a odrzucony przez nią kochanek popełnił samobójstwo, niszcząc przedtem wiele swoich prac. W drugim ogniwie pełnego emocji kwartetu rozbrzmiewa cytat z popularnej wiedeńskiej piosenki O du lieber Augustin. W trzeciej i czwartej części Schönberg zdecydował się na niecodzienny zabieg, mianowicie na wprowadzenie solowego sopranu. Wybrał dwa wiersze Stefana Georga, niemieckiego poety symbolisty i tłumacza na język niemiecki dzieł Dantego, Szekspira i Baudelaire’a. Noszą one tytuły Litania i Zachwyt.

The NFM concert of the Leopoldinum Orchestra conducted by Joseph Swensen will feature music by Jean Sibelius and Arnold Schoenberg. They were among the most important composers active in the first half of the 20th century, but their work was headed in completely different directions. Two string quartets written by them will be arranged by Maestro Swensen.

String Quartet in D minor, Op. 56 "Voces intimae" by Jean Sibelius was written at the turn of 1908 and 1909. Although the Finnish artist wrote short works for a quartet many times in his youth, the above-mentioned work is the only one of this genre written by the artist in the mature phase of his work. The subtitle can be translated as "intimate voices" or "inner voices", which emphasizes the introspective nature of this composition and the enormous role of dialogues between individual instruments. The five-part form of this work is also intriguing: the focal point is the slow movement, Adagio di molto, surrounded by two scherzos and two fast movements full of nervous energy. The premiere in 1910 in Helsinki surprised critics. One of them wrote: "it is not a work for a general audience, [...] it is eccentric and unusual." Paradoxically, the eccentricity and expressiveness of Sibelius's style are today the elements that strongly attract performers and audiences to his music.

String Quartet No. 2 in F sharp minor, Op. 10 by Arnold Schoenberg is basically the equivalent of Sibelius's work, as it was written in 1908. The Austrian composer wrote them during a turbulent period in his life. Although he dedicated the work to his wife, Mathilde, it was not an expression of marital happiness - the woman was then having an affair with the young painter Richard Gerstel. This case had a tragic ending. Mathilde decided to return to her husband, and her rejected lover committed suicide, destroying many of his works. In the second part of the emotional quartet, a quote from the popular Viennese song O du lieber Augustin resounds. In the third and fourth movements, Schoenberg decided on an unusual approach, namely the introduction of a solo soprano. He selected two poems by Stefan Georg, a German Symbolist poet and translator of the works of Dante, Shakespeare and Baudelaire into German. They are titled Litany and Delight .
