Gang warfare in the streets of New York. Proud descendants of European immigrants, the Jets led by Riff control Manhattan's Upper West Side. But their reign is threatened by Bernardo and his Sharks, young Puerto Ricans recently landed in a city where the American dream is confronted with the reality of racism and precariousness. Tired of these brawls, Tony, Riff's best friend, longs for a better life. He meets Maria, Bernardo's sister, at a ball. Forgetting the violence of the world around them, the two young people confess their budding love. But like Romeo and Juliet before them, they cannot escape the hatred that consumes their respective communities. It's Broadway in Alsace! Sixty-five years after its creation, West Side Storyhas not lost any of its topicality. Director Barrie Kosky and choreographer Otto Pichler revisit this musical comedy masterpiece in a show full of light and shadow, celebrating the clash of bodies. This fascinating production is presented for the first time outside of the Komische Oper in Berlin with more than sixty performers on stage, including the dancers of the OnR Ballet in full force.
