Tony and Maria are the Romeo and Juliet of the 20th century, the sharks and jets are the Capulet and Montagú of the West Side of New York. The 1957 Broadway production and later the film adaptation turned West Side Story into an audiovisual icon. Bernstein's music, which describes the action and the tragic background of the story, is one of the most popular in his catalog. The symphonic dance ensemble takes us quickly to 1950s Manhattan.
Guinovart proposes a work for marimba and band, initially written for carillon and band, an original sound that is inspired by three paintings of distant aesthetics: German Romanticism, the Venetian Renaissance and French Surrealism. The first work on the show, by composer Joni Greene, is dedicated to the memory of Blake Brockington, a young transgender and LGTBI activist who committed suicide in 2015. The score was commissioned by the band in which Brockington played the bomber.
