Winterreise: Winterreise Schubert

A work like Winterreise is an icon of our musical tradition, one of the great masterpieces of Europe. Does it do justice to it if it is presented in the form that is usual today – two gentlemen in tails, Steinway, a mostly very large hall?” This was the question asked by the German conductor and composer Hans Zender. His "composed interpretation" of the song cycle, premiered in 1993, is not just an orchestration of the piano sound: Zender invents "contrafactures" to Schubert's music, alienates, rearranges, reassembles and tries to expand the musical future perspectives of the "Winter Journey", but also show their roots in folklore. With this new interpretation, the composer wants to bring us closer to the original: "It is reported that that during the composition of these songs Schubert only appeared to his friends seldom and very distraught. The first performances must have caused more terror than pleasure. Will it be possible to break through the aesthetic routine of our classic reception, which has made such experiences almost impossible, in order to re-experience these primal impulses, this existential impact of the original?”
Maximilian Schmitt sings, who can also be seen as Erik in the new production of “The Flying Dutchman” at the Graz Opera.
