Poor, despite work: The soldier Franz Woyzeck lives trapped in a machine of badly paid odd jobs. As a servant to the captain of his company and as a test subject for dubious medical experiments, Woyzeck barely earns enough money to take care of Marie and their child. He rushes from service to service and is met with nothing but incomprehension, indifference and rudeness. Increasingly paranoid, Woyzeck tries to make sense of the world. Meanwhile, Marie is degraded to an object by men like the drum major and despised by women because of her illegitimate child with Woyzeck. The musician Tom Waits complements Büchner's fragmentary text, which describes the world as an "eternal state of violence", with iconic melodies full of longing. His times rough-driving, sometimes swaying rhythms reinforce the forlornness and humanity of the characters. “[Woyzeck] makes you fear for the characters and makes you think about your life. I guess that's all you can ask of a piece.« (T. Waits)

After »Alice«, director Malte C. Lachmann is staging »Woyzeck«, the second collaborative work by Robert Wilson and Tom Waits at the Lübeck Theater based on a literary original.
