Attaché toute sa vie à l'exploration de « la musique du langage humain », Janáček, passionné par le russe, à lui-même traduit en tchèque Souvenirs de la maison des morts, le roman de Dostoïevski qu'il a ensuite adapté. Or, c'est en s'immergeant dans la langue tchèque que Janáček va forger sa propre grammaire musicale fondée sur la vérité et sur la spontanéité. Composé en 1928, De la maison des mort est à cet égard son œuvre la plus aboutie et la plus radicale. Sans se soucier des tonalités ou des modes, le compositeur livre un style orchestral basé sur l'économie et le jaillissement.

Entre réalisme théâtral et utilisation fantastique des décors, la mise en scène de cette œuvre phare a été marquée par l'interprétation qu'en a faite Patrice Chéreau. La proximité avec le théâtre de Krzysztof Warlikowski, en charge de cette mise en scène, est elle-même évidente : chez lui les chanteurs sont aussi des comédiens dont le poids de l'incarnation est sans cesse remis en question et le travail dramatique d'une profondeur fascinante.

Attached all his life to the exploration of "the music of human language", Janáček, passionate about Russian, himself translated into Czech Memories of the house of the dead , the novel by Dostoyevsky that he then adapted. However, it is by immersing himself in the Czech language that Janáček will forge his own musical grammar based on truth and spontaneity. Composed in 1928, De la maison des mort is in this respect his most accomplished and most radical work. Without worrying about keys or modes, the composer delivers an orchestral style based on economy and spurt.

Between theatrical realism and fantastic use of sets, the staging of this landmark work was marked by the interpretation of it by Patrice Chéreau. The proximity to the theater of Krzysztof Warlikowski, in charge of this staging, is itself obvious: for him the singers are also actors whose weight of incarnation is constantly questioned and the dramatic work of fascinating depth.
