Operabase — New and Rare Opera Listing — 2009/10
One hundred years ago, almost all music was new and rare to its audience. Without recordings, the audience could only listen to what was on offer live. Without radio, the audience could only listen to what was available to them locally. A piece might be heard once or two and then disappear for a decade or more.

New and rare works occupy a very different part of the repertory now. Historical research and widening taste has brought back the early and baroque opera into the standard repertoire, the 20th century brought an explosion of different musical styles (both newly invented and from other cultures). There are fewer creations these days, but they cover a wider musical range, and the audience is less homogenous, so connecting the work and the audience has become ever more important.

This list is designed to help give the maximum profile to new works, over the largest catchment area

L'amour coupable Opéra, 5 acts; Libretto: Eugène Green, after the play 'La Mère coupable' by Beaumarchais;  (WP) 23-27 Apr; Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie p. Stephan Grögler
Two of the most popular and successful comic operas are based on the goings-on in the Almaviva household. The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro are settings of the first two plays of the trilogy by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. Part of the reason of the success is the appeal of the rounded characters created by Beaumarchais (it has been suggested that 'Figaro' is a play on 'fils Caron' -- the 'son' of the author)
Thierry Pécou finishes his three year residency at Rennes with his first full scale opera -- a setting of the third play -- called L'amour coupable.
The third play, L'autre Tartuffe ou La mere coupable, is a much darker piece around the same characters 20 years later. The guilty mother of the title is the Countess, who has had a child by Cherubino following a moment of madness when he forced himself upon her. The family is also in financial trouble but is saved from arranged marriages and bankruptcy by the wits of Figaro.
Two other operas this season re-use characters from the trilogy.
Massenet's Chérubin (Cherubino) is an enjoyable piece of froth, following Cherubino's intrigues and misadventures on his 17th birthday. Although he ends up with just one girl, the opera's closing musical quote from Don Giovanni suggests that this is only temporary.
John Coriglino's new reduced version of The Ghosts of Versailles takes place in three worlds: the ghostly, the theatrical and the historical. Beaumarchais, one of the spirits inhabiting Versailles, falls in love with Marie Antoinette and contrives a new play in order to change history and prevent her beheading, only to have his efforts undone by the disillusioned revolutionary Figaro.
