When his parents announce their son's engagement to another bride, he promises his beloved in writing that he will marry her within eight weeks. When she finds out about the engagement, she goes abroad disappointed. Only shortly before the end of the eight-week period does she appear as a woman who is now said to be married at the ball that her parents are throwing to mark the announcement of her former lover's engagement – ​​on someone else's arm. The scandal seems perfect! Only a surprising revelation ensures the long-awaited happy ending.

When the curtain rose for the first time on November 17, 1915 in the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna for the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin, the audience witnessed the birth of a worldwide success. Kálmán's music proves an enormous richness.
He skilfully combines the melancholy of the Hungarian csárdás with the elegance of the Viennese waltz and new elements from the world of hits. Melodies like "The Chose doesn't work without women", "Do you remember it?", "Die Mädis vom Chantant", "Let's do it after the swallows" or "Jai Mamam Bruderherz" went around the world after the premiere and became to real catchy tunes.
