The poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard and the philosopher Colline live in an artist living community in an ice-cold attic. They cannot buy wood from their art to fire the stove, nobody wants to know anything about their imagination. It is only thanks to a stroke of luck that, at least on Christmas Eve, they do not have to go hungry, but can celebrate happily. And suddenly the neighbor Mimì knocks on the door, who finds the key to Rodolfo's heart in the dark. But the poetic magic of young love quickly evaporates, because jealousies, financial worries and above all Mimì's fatal illness burden the lovers, who only find each other again in the hour of Mimì's death.
What Henri Murger describes in his relaxed sequence of scenes “La Vie de Bohème” as the attitude towards life of a generation of artists in 19th century Paris shaped by the contempt for the bourgeoisie, Giacomo Puccini sums up dramaturgically to the passionate love that young people are primarily capable of and to describe the merciless failure of this love against the backdrop of a pulsating big city.
Dietmar Pflegerl's production provides newcomers to the opera with the ideal introduction to this wonderful art form and enchants experienced opera fans equally with the accuracy of the personal guidance. In “La Bohème”, chief conductor Roland Kluttig conducts an ensemble that is newly cast in almost all roles.
