La Traviata is part with Rigoletto and Le Trouvère of what has been called the popular trilogy that Verdi composed between 1850 and 1853. He was then barely 40 years old and already a long career as a composer behind him with in particular Nabucco, represented in 1842 at La Scala in Milan, which was a huge success with the famous Choir of Slaves in which the Italians, then under the Austrian yoke, recognized themselves.

Verdi will successively see his two children and his wife die before binding himself to a famous singer Giuseppina Strepponi whose life had resembled that of "la traviata", the perverted in Italian, an affair that his father had rejected. It was for this reason that he had been particularly sensitive to the play by Alexandre Dumas fils La Dame aux camélias which he had seen in Paris at the beginning of 1852. After a failed premiere in Venice, in 1853, due to distribution, La Traviata will triumph the following year and for a century and a half its success has never wavered...
