Créé en 1642 au Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo de Venise.

Aux héros sublimes et triomphants de la mythologie, Monteverdi préfère pour son dernier opéra des personnages complexes et cruellement humains, rompant ainsi avec une (jeune) tradition qu'il avait lui-même contribué à établir avec ses premiers ouvrages lyriques. Dans une atmosphère toute shakespearienne, le trivial s'allie au sublime tandis que la musique se fait désir et sensualité. Jamais l'expression des passions n'avait atteint un tel degré de réalisme psychologique avant cette partition où le chant est magnifié par un petit orchestre tout en nuance et subtilité. Un chef-d'œuvre des plus enivrants, confié pour la première fois au chef Raphaël Pichon et à l'ensemble Pygmalion, dans une mise en scène d'Evgeny Titov servie par la fine fleur du chant baroque.

In his final opera, Monteverdi favored complex and cruelly human characters over the sublime and triumphant heroes of mythology, thus breaking with a (new) tradition that he himself had helped establish with his early operas. In an atmosphere worthy of Shakespearean tragedy, the trivial merges with the sublime while the music resonates with desire and sensuality. Never before had passion been expressed with such psychological realism than in this score which magnifies the voices with a small orchestra providing the necessary nuance and subtlety. An intoxicating masterpiece entrusted for the first time to conductor Raphaël Pichon and the Pygmalion ensemble under the direction of Evgeny Titov accompanied by the very best of Baroque singing.
