During his leave in Japan, Marine Lieutenant Pinkerton buys a house with servants from the matchmaker Goro. Also included in the deal is a marriage with the young geisha, Cio-Cio-San, also called Butterfly. Unlike Pinkerton, who takes the promise of marriage lightly, Butterfly gives herself completely to her husband. During the wedding party, Butterfly's uncle interrupts the party and curses Butterfly for her dishonorable behavior. Three years later, Butterfly waits longingly and patiently for Pinkerton, who left shortly after their wedding. Butterfly lives in the house with their son, whom Pinkerton doesn't know about. Finally he returns, but this time in the company of his new American wife, Kate. The couple wants to take the child back to the United States. Unable to face the faithful Butterfly himself, Pinkerton sends his wife and Consul Sharpless to convince her to give up her son. Butterfly now realizes that she has lost everything - her husband, her son and her honor. In the end, she says goodbye to her son and kills herself.
