Composed in 1823, when Mendelssohn was just 14 years old for the concerts that were held every Saturday in the rich family home in Berlin, the Concerto in D minor for violin, piano and string orchestra is, together with the early symphonies always for orchestra d strings and the Concerto in E major for two pianos , a shining example of the precocious genius of the German composer who, here, shows a melodic freshness also derived from his young age and a solid knowledge of classical forms. This is evident already in the first movement, Allegro , in sonata form, with a regular orchestral exposition in which the themes are presented, of which the first serious in D minorcontrasts with the second of cantabile character in F major . The dialogue between the two instruments is also well structured, performing virtuosic episodes thanks to a writing full of agility and the presence, in the piano parts, of broken octaves. Within the development there is an unusual Andante , indicated in the score as Recitativo , in which the violin on a tremolo accompaniment by the piano produces a melody of intense lyricism and rhapsodic character. The reprise is regular, at the end of which the cadenza for the two instruments that precedes the very short coda is inserted. The theme of the second movement, Adagio , is very beautiful and with a collected character, which, exposed by the orchestra, is subjected to variations by both the piano and the violin. The last movement, Allegro molto , is a brilliant page with a bipartite structure, opened by the piano.

Inspired by the oriental collection of fairy tales, One Thousand and One Nights , the symphonic suite Shéhérazade was composed by Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888 and performed on October 28 of the same year in Petersburg under the direction of the author who, at the beginning of the score, explicitly declared the source of inspiration by introducing the eponymous character and proposing a summary of the story:

 

“Sultan Schahriar, convinced of the perfidy and infidelity of women, had sworn to sentence each of his wives to death after the first night. But the Sultana Shéhérazade managed to save her life by involving her fierce husband in wonderful stories that she told him during 1001 nights. Stimulated by her curiosity, the sultan continually postponed the torture of his wife, ending up completely abandoning her bloodthirsty project. Shéhérazade told wonderful stories to the sultan; for her tales of her, she borrowed lines from poets and words from popular songs; she managing to create fairy tales after fairy tales, adventures after adventures ”.

 

The composer made two versions of Shéhérazade, in the second of which the descriptive titles given at the beginning of each movement were eliminated, without, however, the oriental atmosphere being in any way altered, achieved through themes that mix popular Russian elements with pentatonic system. The absence of titles, in the second version, does not detract from the narrative structure of the work created through a theme, entrusted to the solo violin, which acts as a leitmotif and appears in the introductions to the first, second and fourth movement and in the interlude of the third, representing Shéhérazade telling the fantastic stories.

The first movement, The Sea and Sinbad's Ship, which, from a formal point of view, presents itself as a sonata form deprived of the development section, begins with a rough, heavy and, at the same time, solemn theme performed in octaves by the orchestra which perfectly represents the dark and terrible character of the Sultan. After a short interlude the solo violin, accompanied by the harp, intervenes with a melismatic theme to represent the protagonist who tells the fantastic stories. The exhibition develops around two thematic groups of which the first is made up of the theme of the Sultan always entrusted to the orchestra followed by a melancholic one, entrusted to the woodwinds, which evokes immense marine expanses, while the second is characterized by the theme of Shéhérazade. This theme returns in the short introduction of the second movement, The Story of Prince Kalender, which, from a formal point of view, has a tripartite structure and has a brilliant character that makes it comparable to the Scherzo of the romantic symphony. The main theme, of a nostalgic nature, is entrusted first to the bassoon and then to the oboe to finally pass to the violins, while the music takes on a brilliant dance character. In the second part of the piece there is a real twist with the brass introducing a martial theme which at a certain point stops on a pianissimo tremolo of the strings to give way to an ad libitum cadenceof the clarinet with an oriental flavor. Finally, in the reprise, the nostalgic character of the main theme has now dissolved, giving way to a rhythmic energy in which the entire orchestra participates. The entire third movement, The young prince and the young princess , however, thrives on the contrast of the two themes that respectively represent the two characters in the title. The theme of the young prince is a tender melody entrusted first to the violins and taken up by the oboes and cellos, while the second, which represents the young princess , is a graceful motif with a dancing character. In the fourth movement, Festa a Bagdad, the sea, the shipwreck, almost all the themes exposed in the previous movements return to represent different situations and not in the same way as Leitmotivs , as Korsakov himself was able to point out:

 

“all those that seem to be leitmotifs are nothing more than purely musical materials, motifs of symphonic development. These motifs circulate in all parts of the piece, chasing and intertwining”.

 

After a brief introduction, in which the theme of the Sultan and that of Shéhérazade are repeated, the lively party in Baghdadit can begin with a theme that immediately takes the form of a sort of perpetual motion. The second theme is, however, entrusted to the horns and trumpets. In this movement the representation of the sea is very suggestive, which is no longer portrayed in a moment of peace, but during a storm that upsets the navigational attitude of the vessel until it is shipwrecked amidst the roars of the unleashed elements whose devastating fury is rendered effectively by cymbal and bass drum hits. In the end the theme of the Sultan returns who finally expresses himself in a sweet way, now distracted from his intention to kill his wife, who seems to entrust his triumph to the violin, the instrument he used to enchant him, with its penetrating harmonic sounds that come to the end.

Composto nel 1823, quando Mendelssohn aveva appena 14 anni per i concerti che si tenevano ogni sabato nella ricca casa di Berlino della famiglia, il Concerto in re minore per violino, pianoforte e orchestra d'archi è, insieme alle giovanili sinfonie sempre per orchestra d'archi e al Concerto in mi maggiore  per due pianoforti, un fulgido esempio del precoce genio del compositore tedesco che, qui, mostra una freschezza melodica derivata anche dalla giovane età e una solida conoscenza delle forme classiche. Ciò è evidente già nel primo movimento, Allegro, in forma-sonata, con un'esposizione orchestrale regolare nella quale vengono presentati i temi, del quale il primo serioso in re minore contrasta con il secondo di carattere cantabile in fa maggiore. Ben strutturato anche il dialogo tra i due strumenti che si esibiscono in episodi virtuosistici grazie a una scrittura ricca di agilità e alla presenza, nelle parte del pianoforte, delle ottave spezzate. All'interno dello sviluppo si segnala un insolito Andante, indicato in partitura come Recitativo, nel quale il violino su un accompagnamento in tremoli del pianoforte si produce in una melodia di intenso lirismo e di carattere rapsodico. Regolare è la ripresa alla cui conclusione è inserita la cadenza per i due strumenti che precede la brevissima coda. Molto bello e di carattere raccolto è il tema del secondo movimento, Adagio, che, esposto dall'orchestra, è sottoposto a delle variazioni da parte sia del pianoforte che del violino. L'ultimo movimento, Allegro molto, è una pagina brillante dalla struttura bipartita, aperta dal pianoforte.

Ispirata alla raccolta orientale di fiabe, Le mille e una notte, la suite sinfonica Shéhérazade fu composta da Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakov nel 1888 ed eseguita il 28 ottobre dello stesso anno a Pietroburgo sotto la direzione dell’autore che, all’inizio della partitura, dichiarò in modo esplicito la fonte d’ispirazione introducendo il personaggio eponimo e proponendo un riassunto della storia:

 

“Il sultano Schahriar, convinto della perfidia e dell’infedeltà delle donne, aveva giurato di condannare a morte ciascuna delle proprie mogli, dopo la prima notte. Ma la Sultana Shéhérazade riuscì ad avere salva la propria vita interessando il feroce marito a meravigliosi racconti che gli andò narrando durante 1001 notti. Stimolato dalla curiosità, il sultano rimandava continuamente il supplizio della moglie finendo per rinunciare completamente al suo progetto sanguinario. Shéhérazade raccontò storie stupende al sultano; per i suoi racconti, prese a prestito i versi dai poeti e le parole delle canzoni popolari; riuscendo a creare fiabe su fiabe, avventure su avventure”.

 

Di Shéhérazade il compositore fece due versioni, nella seconda delle quali furono eliminati i titoli descrittivi dati all’inizio di ciascun movimento, senza che, però, venisse in qualche modo alterata l’atmosfera orientaleggiante, realizzata attraverso temi che mescolano elementi popolari russi con il sistema pentatonico. L’assenza dei titoli, nella seconda versione, non toglie nulla alla struttura narrativa dell’opera realizzata attraverso un tema, affidato al violino solista, che funge da filo conduttore e appare nelle introduzioni al primo, al secondo e al quarto movimento e nell’intermezzo del terzo, rappresentando Shéhérazade che racconta le storie fantastiche.

Il primo movimento, Il mare e la nave di Sinbad, che, dal punto di vista formale, si presenta come una forma-sonata privata della sezione di sviluppo, inizia con un tema rude, pesante e, al tempo stesso, solenne eseguito in ottave dall’orchestra che rappresenta perfettamente il carattere cupo e terribile del Sultano. Dopo un breve interludio il violino solista, accompagnato dall’arpa, interviene con un tema melismatico per rappresentare la protagonista che racconta le storie fantastiche. L’esposizione si svolge attorno a due gruppi tematici dei quali il primo è costituito dal tema del Sultano affidato sempre all’orchestra seguito da uno malinconico, affidato ai legni, che evoca immense distese marine, mentre il secondo è caratterizzato dal tema di Shéhérazade. Questo tema ritorna nella breve introduzione del secondo movimento, La storia del principe Kalender, che, dal punto di vista formale, ha una struttura tripartita e presenta un carattere brillante che lo rende paragonabile allo Scherzo della sinfonia romantica. Il tema principale, di carattere nostalgico, è affidato prima al fagotto e poi all’oboe per passare alla fine ai violini, mentre la musica assume un brillante carattere di danza. Nella seconda parte del brano si ha un vero e proprio colpo di scena con gli ottoni che introducono un tema marziale che a un certo punto si arresta su un tremolo in pianissimo degli archi per lasciare il posto ad una cadenza ad libitum del clarinetto di sapore orientaleggiante. Nella ripresa, infine, il carattere nostalgico del tema principale si è ormai dissolto lasciando il posto ad un’energia ritmica a cui partecipa l’intera orchestra. Tutto il terzo movimento, Il giovane principe e la giovane principessa, vive, invece, del contrasto dei due temi che rappresentano rispettivamente i due personaggi del titolo. Il tema del giovane principe è una tenera melodia affidata prima ai violini e ripresa dagli oboi e dai violoncelli, mentre il secondo, che rappresenta la giovane principessa, è un grazioso motivo di carattere danzante. Nel quarto movimento, Festa a Bagdad, il mare, il naufragio, ritornano quasi tutti i temi esposti nei movimenti precedenti per rappresentare situazioni diverse e non alla stregua di Leitmotivs, come lo stesso Korsakov ebbe modo di precisare:

 

“tutti quelli che sembrano Leitmotiv non sono altro che materiali puramente musicali, motivi di sviluppo sinfonico. Questi motivi circolano in tutte le parti del pezzo, inseguendosi e intrecciandosi”.

 

Dopo una breve introduzione, in cui vengono riproposti il tema del Sultano e quello di Shéhérazade, la movimentata festa a Bagdad può avere inizio con un tema che si configura subito come una sorta di moto perpetuo. Il secondo tema è, invece, affidato ai corni e alle trombe. In questo movimento è molto suggestiva la rappresentazione del mare, che non è più ritratto in un momento di pace, ma durante una tempesta che sconvolge l’assetto di navigazione del vascello fino a farlo naufragare tra i fragori degli elementi scatenati la cui furia devastatrice è resa efficacemente da colpi di piatti e grancassa. Alla fine ritorna il tema del Sultano che, finalmente, si esprime in modo dolce, ormai distolto dal suo proposito di uccidere la moglie, che sembra affidare il suo trionfo al violino, lo strumento che ha usato per incantarlo, con i suoi penetranti suoni armonici che giungono nel finale.
