This new season opens with one of the grand monuments of Richard Wagner’s oeuvre and one of the greatest love stories of all time: Tristan & Isolde. The genesis of Tristan seems undeniably linked to the private life of its author. Wagner began composing it in Zurich in 1857, while he was staying at the property of his patron, the wealthy banker Otto Wesendonck, and succumbing to the charm of the beautiful Mathilde… who was none other than his host’s wife. Eight years later, he entrusted Tristan‘s premiere to conductor Hans von Bülow, whose wife Cosima had just given birth to a little… Isolde, Richard’s daughter. Wagner sublimates his forbidden loves through the Celtic legend of Tristan and Yseult, which medieval literature elevated to myth status. The score brings the passion between the melancholy knight and the indomitable princess to the point of incandescence, using unresolved chromaticism as a philtre of unfulfilled desire. The ‘infinite melody’ spreading from the voice to the orchestra leads the work almost hypnotically to its final climax: Isolde’s Liebestod, the ultimate sacrifice of love.

After Parsifal in 22-23, Michael Thalheimer will find choice material in Tristan and Isolde for his minimalist aesthetic and love of contrasts. The director, who excels in the art of bringing out the deep humanity of characters, sees in the meeting between Tristan and Isolde an explosion capable of redefining the very contours of the universe. On the stage’s metaphorical ship, immersed in the play of shadows and lights, the star-crossed lovers will traverse all the drama’s strata, punctuated by the obstacles raised between them, but also by the violence of their inner lives. Their single resolution: to dissolve together into a final darkness. Or in the famous words of Nietzche, into a ‘weird and sweet infinity’.

The royal couple – Tristan is nephew to the King of Cornwall, and Isolde the daughter of the King of Ireland – will be played by Gwyn Hughes Jones, the great Welsh tenor and Wagnerian of the first order, and by Elisabet Strid, who dazzled as Senta in the Royal Opera House London’s recent The Flying Dutchman. Surrounding them will be Kristina Stanek’s Brangäne, and Tareq Nazmi in the role of King Marke – following on from his masterful Gurnemanz in Thalheimer’s Parsifal. At the head of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande is conductor Marc Albrecht, who with his deep knowledge of the Wagner repertoire will steer this production with compelling clarity.

Cette nouvelle saison s’ouvre avec l’un des monuments de l’œuvre de Richard Wagner et l’une des plus grandes histoires d’amour de tous les temps : Tristan & Isolde. La genèse de Tristan semble indéniablement liée à la vie sentimentale de son auteur. Wagner en amorce la composition à Zurich en 1857, alors qu’il séjourne dans la propriété de son mécène, le riche banquier Otto Wesendonck et qu’il y succombe au charme de la belle Mathilde… qui n’est autre que l’épouse de son hôte. Huit ans plus tard, il confie la création de Tristan au chef Hans von Bülow, dont la femme Cosima vient de donner naissance à une petite… Isolde, fille de Richard. Wagner sublime ses amours interdites à travers la légende celtique de Tristan et Yseult, que la littérature médiévale a élevée au rang de mythe. La partition porte à l’incandescence la passion entre le chevalier mélancolique et la princesse indomptable, usant du chromatisme irrésolu comme d’un philtre de désir inassouvi. La « mélodie infinie » qui se répand de la voix à l’orchestre mène quant à elle de façon quasi hypnotique l’œuvre jusqu’à son paroxysme final : le Liebestod d’Isolde, ultime sacrifice d’amour.

Après Parsifal en 22-23, Michael Thalheimer trouvera dans Tristan & Isolde un matériau de choix pour son esthétique minimaliste et son amour des contrastes. Le metteur en scène, qui excelle dans l’art de faire émerger la profonde humanité des personnages, voit en effet dans la rencontre entre Tristan et Isolde une déflagration susceptible de redéfinir les contours mêmes de l’univers. Sur le vaisseau métaphorique de la scène, plongés dans des jeux d’ombres et de lumières, les amants maudits traverseront toutes les strates du drame, rythmés par les obstacles dressés entre eux mais aussi par la violence de leurs vies intérieures. Seule résolution possible : se dissoudre ensemble dans une ultime obscurité. Ou encore selon les célèbres mots de Nietzsche, dans une « effrayante et suave infinitude ».

Le couple princier – Tristan est neveu du roi de Cornouailles, Isolde fille du roi d’Irlande – sera incarné par Gwyn Hughes Jones, grand ténor gallois et wagnérien de premier ordre, ainsi que par Elisabet Strid, éblouissante Senta dans le récent Vaisseau fantôme du Royal Opera House de Londres. Ils seront entourés de la Brangäne de Kristina Stanek et de Tareq Nazmi dans le rôle du Roi Marke – il était déjà un Gurnemanz magistral dans le Parsifal de Thalheimer. À la tête de l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, le chef Marc Albrecht, grâce à sa profonde connaissance du répertoire de Wagner, gouvernera cette production à l’impérieuse clarté.
