The Anhaltisches Theater Dessau has a long tradition and produces theater and music for Dessau-Roßlau, the region (Anhalt, Wittenberg) and its guests in the five categories of music theater, concerts, drama, ballet and puppet theater. The Great House on Friedensplatz, opened in 1938, was designed as a theater for the entire region and has around 1070 seats. With its enormous stage dimensions, the Anhalt Theater is one of the largest theaters in Europe. The Anhalt Philharmonic - one of the oldest and most traditional orchestras in the state of Saxony-Anhalt - has its home here and offers a variety of symphony and chamber concerts. In summer, the orchestra also presents the popular lake concerts in the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. There is also the rocky island of Stein, in whose amphitheater the summer theater of the Anhalt Theater regularly takes place. The Anhaltisches Theater attracts visitors from all parts of Germany with its stage art. Successful productions also go on guest performances in other cities and countries.


Altes Theater
The red house in the heart of the city was originally conceived as a cultural center and opened as such in 2008. The Old Theater is the smaller venue of the Anhalt Theater and, with its three different stages, enables a variety of theatre. Here, on the one hand, the puppet theater has its regular stage with around 100 seats and already inspires a pre-school audience. On the other stages of the Old Theater - in the foyer and in the studio (120 seats) - it is mainly the acting ensemble of the Anhalt Theater that presents itself. With exciting plays and new theater formats, there is scope for experimental, young and daring theatre.
