Canadian Tenor David Menzies is becoming more and more known for his remarkable performances of repertoire from the baroque to the contemporary, in opera and in concert.   He has sung the major works of Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Rameau, Haydn, Mozart, Rossini, Mendelssohn, Orff and Britten with L’Opera de Montreal, L’Orchestra Symphonique de Montreal, The Winnipeg Symphony, The Thunder Bay Symphony, The McGill Chamber Orchestra, L’Orchestre de la Saguenay Lac St-Jean and the Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra.
Mr. Menzies’ diverse operatic roles include works by Handel (Alcina, Acis and Galatea, Rodelinda, Semele, and Radamisto); Mozart (Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, La finta giardinera, Die Zauberflote); and Britten (The Rape of Lucretia, The Turn of the Screw, Albert Herring, Gloriana); as well as more contemporary works such as Vanessa, Little Women, and The Death of Klinghoffer. Greatly appreciated for his musicality and spirit of collaboration, he has been sought after in the creation of new works all over North America.  He has recorded for the Naxos and Analekta labels, for Cirque de Soleil, and has been heard on CBC/SRC radio.
During the 2013-14 Season, Mr. Menzies will perform Moses in Zelenka's Il Serpente di Bronzo with La Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal; Recitals of Art Songs of Fauré, Schubert, Beethoven, and Britten in Brussels and Essen; Haydn’s Missa in Tempore Belli with The Thunder Bay Symphony; Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël and Bach Nun komm der Heiden Heiland with Thirteen Strings (Ottawa); Handel’s Messiah with the Toronto Choral Society; Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera York; and Jupiter in Handel’s Semele with La Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal.
Recently, he sang Britten’s Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo at the Tanglewood Festival; Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with Appassionata; Don Pédro/Octavio in Campra’s L’Europe galante with Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal; Acis in Handel’s Acis and Galatea with L’Atelier Lyrique Opera de Montreal; Messiah with the Aradia Ensemble; Ivanoff/Phantom in “Rossini et ses Muses” with L’Atelier Lyrique Opera de Montreal; Jupiter in Rameau’s Naïs with the Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra conducted by Christophe Rousset; and made his début with Opéra de Montréal as Giuseppe (La Traviata).
Mr. Menzies obtained a Doctorate in Music from McGill University in 2010, specializing in opera from Gluck to Meyerbeer and art song of the 20th century.  He has studied voice with Stefano Algeri, Elizabeth Koch, and Gerald Martin Moore and has participated in masterclasses or coached with Anne Sofie von Otter, Hakan Hagegard, Gerd Turk, Christoph Prégardien, Mark Padmore and Paul Agnew.  He was a member of L’Atelier Lyrique at Opera de Montreal in 2012-13, and a Vocal Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center, as well as Lecturer at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University.
Mr. Menzies is the recipient of a Canada Council for the Arts grant for 2013-14.
