OPER.A.20.21 2018-19 Review: Dionysos Rising

Dionysos, the son of Zeus and the human princess, Semele, was the last of the gods to arrive at Olympus, and was always seen as somewhat of an outsider. Widely known for being the god of wine, of ritual madness and religious ecstasy, he is also the god of illusion and the theatre. He is associated with the giving over of the self to the senses, both pleasurable and painful, and of the abandonment of restraint and rationality, hence his worshippers indulge in frenzied revelries, who then reap both its positive and negative consequences. It is possible that the Dionysos cult may go back 3,500 years, yet the myth and its message still retain a strong hold over the human imagination, its relevance for today’s society as pertinent as ever, and this is the starting point for the composer, Roberto David Rusconi’s, new opera “Dionysos Rising,” premiered in Trento as part of the OPER.A.20.21, 2018-19 season.

PRISCILLA – Musical by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott. Austria First performance / premiere

Tick ( Karsten Kenzel ) is torn between family and travesty with many nuances; David Arnsperger plays the bourgeois solid, almost sober "Bernadette" with care and finesse, and Gernot Romic the colorful bird Adam, who shines through the most colorful and craziest performances in this trio, which is not only thanks to the costume department. In the course of the play, Bob joins them, a skilled car (bus) mechanic whose life takes a turn through the new friends - John F. Kutil in sympathetic stage presence.

TITANIC THE MUSICAL at Landestheater Linz

Simon Eichenberger ( Director/ Choreographer) used every inch of the Landestheaters huge stage to present the show's real star, the ship itself. Unique set designs ( by Charles Quiggin) combined with all those different stories, from First Class to the Commanders Bridge down to the Third Class, many of them seeking a better world and aiming for their personal American Dream. A heartbreaking moment to witness these passengers boarding the ship, full of hope and joy, already knowing that most of them had to find death instead of the new world. Of course, everybody knows how it has to end, but you are still on the edge of your seat, hoping for a surprising turn-around.

With the bike through the horse opera

Marc Seitz remains undisputed as Winnetouch, and he is received with thunderous applause from the very first appearance. In a pink costume, he prances across the stage while the rainbow-colored parasols rotate next to him. Whether he walks to the cocktail bar or files his nails - Winnetouch moves as if he had invented the word "Prosecco" himself. A charming figure in Herbig's story because he refuses war and violence and remains true to what he does best until the end: enjoying life on his Powder Rosa Ranch. For example, singing in a flying bathtub while soap bubbles float down next to him.
