LYRICAL ART MADE ITS DEBUT IN LAUSANNE IN 1755
Since the 18th century, lyrical art has had pride of place in Lausanne, where numerous venues have welcomed passing troupes. As in Paris, Grétry, Duni, Montsigny, Rousseau, Gossec, Philidor, Dalayrac, Paisiello, Piccinni were well-known composers there.

Dependent on the program proposed by the troops passing through after the French Revolution, a public extended to circles other than that of the aristocracy thus had the opportunity to applaud certain operas shortly after their creation in the theater of 1,100 squares erected on the current rue de Langallerie, and named "La Comédie" or "salle Dupleix".

Lausanne residents can appreciate Norma , Don Giovanni , La Muette de Portici ,  Der Freischütz , Fidelio ,  Robert the Devil , La Sonnambula , La Dame Blanche , Le nozze di Figaro ,  Romeo and Juliet , La Cenerentola,  I Capuletti and I Montecchi .

In 1859, the "Comédie" closed and the shows were to be given at the Casino de Derrière-Bourg, the current location of the Banque Cantonale Vaudoise. Too small, this hall with barely 400 seats, badly equipped, offers shows of poor quality.

The inhabitants of Lausanne then mobilized to obtain a performance hall capable of hosting performances of the great repertoire.

THE CASINO-THÉÂTRE WAS INAUGURATED ON MAY 10, 1871
Inaugurated on May 10, 1871, it will be an “Italian-style” theatre, decorated by Grasset and decorated by Borschgrave and Bidau, which will offer the population both the classics of the repertoire and recent works. In 1931, a complete restructuring of the theater was started. Original ornamentation and decoration give way to the art-deco style as we know it today. The Casino-Théâtre has lived. The Municipal Theater was born!

The reopening, during the opera season in the spring of 1932, saw the formation of three troupes (opera, comic opera, operetta) and a choir of forty-two singers. Manuel Roth created, in 1955, the Festival of Italian Operas, then, in 1956, the International Festival of Lausanne in the new hall of Beaulieu, the lyrical season of the hall of the Municipal Theater is now almost exclusively devoted to operetta.

L'ART LYRIQUE FAIT SON ENTRÉE À LAUSANNE EN 1755
Depuis le XVIIIe siècle, l’art lyrique a la part belle à Lausanne où de nombreux lieux accueillent les troupes de passage. Comme à Paris, Grétry, Duni, Montsigny, Rousseau, Gossec, Philidor, Dalayrac, Paisiello, Piccinni, y étaient des compositeurs connus.

Tributaire du programme proposé par les troupes de passage après la Révolution française, un public élargi à d’autres cercles que celui de l’aristocratie a ainsi l’occasion d’applaudir certains opéras peu de temps après leur création dans théâtre de 1’100 places érigé sur l’actuelle rue de Langallerie, et nommé « La Comédie » ou « salle Dupleix ».

Les Lausannois peuvent apprécier Norma, Don Giovanni, La Muette de Portici, Der Freischütz, Fidelio, Robert le diable, La Sonnambula, La Dame Blanche, Le nozze di Figaro, Roméo et Juliette, La Cenerentola, I Capuletti e I Montecchi.

En 1859, la « Comédie » ferme et les spectacles doivent se donner au Casino de Derrière-Bourg, actuel emplacement de la Banque Cantonale Vaudoise. Trop petite, cette salle d’à peine 400 places, mal équipée, offre des spectacles de piètre qualité.

Les Lausannois se mobilisent alors pour obtenir une salle de spectacles apte à recevoir des représentations du grand répertoire.

LE CASINO-THÉÂTRE EST INAUGURÉ LE 10 MAI 1871
Inauguré le 10 mai 1871, ce sera un théâtre « à l’italienne », ornementé par Grasset et décoré par Borschgrave et Bidau qui va offrir à la population aussi bien les classiques du répertoire que des ouvrages récents. En 1931, une restructuration complète du théâtre est mise en chantier. Ornementation et décoration originales font place au style art-déco tel que nous le connaissons actuellement. Le Casino-Théâtre a vécu. Le Théâtre Municipal est né!

La réouverture, lors de la saison lyrique du printemps 1932, voit la formation de trois troupes (opéra, opéra-comique, opérette) et d’un chœur de quarante-deux chanteurs. Manuel Roth créant, en 1955, le Festival d’opéras italiens, puis, en 1956, le Festival International de Lausanne dans la nouvelle salle de Beaulieu, la saison lyrique de la salle du Théâtre Municipal est désormais presque exclusivement dévolue à l’opérette.
