Richard Strauss originally planned an opera based on the subject of the legendary jester Till Eulenspiegel, but he rejected this plan and composed the tone poem of the same name, which premiered in 1895. At the same time, Strauss worked on the symphonic poem Don Quixote, which was first heard three years later. Reading about the medieval adventure stories of the Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes made a lasting impression on Strauss. The Four Last Songs, which Strauss originally did not envisage as a cycle, are considered his legacy. They depict a life cycle inspired by confronting his own death. He did not live to see the premiere.

Ursprünglich hatte Richard Strauss eine Oper nach dem Sujet des legendären Spaßmachers Till Eulenspiegel geplant, doch er verwarf diesen Plan und komponierte die gleichnamige Tondichtung, welche 1895 uraufgeführt wurde. Parallel arbeitete Strauss an der Symphonischen Dichtung Don Quixote, die drei Jahre später erstmals erklungen ist. Die Lektüre zu den mittelalterlichen Abenteuergeschichten des Spaniers Miguel de Cervantes haben Strauss nachhaltig beeindruckt. Als sein Vermächtnis gelten die Vier letzten Lieder, die Strauss ursprünglich nicht als Zyklus vorgesehen hatte. Sie stellen einen Lebenszyklus dar, inspiriert von der Auseinandersetzung mit seinem eigenen Tod. Die Uraufführung erlebte er nicht mehr.
