With his 'Prélude Solennel', Eduard Tubin created a musical commitment to his home country from Estonian melodies before fleeing the Russian invasion in 1944 to Sweden.

In the “New World”, wistfully thinking about his native Bohemia, Antonín Dvořák wrote one of the most popular cello concertos of all time in the winter of 1894/95. Alban Gerhardt plays the solo part in Oldenburg, whom The Guardian praised as "one of the most subtle cellists far and wide": "expressive, without gimmickry and noble."

In the 1880s, the Parisian Société Nationale de Musique fought for an upscale French style of music in contrast to growing "decadence". In this sense, Société member César Franck wrote his only symphony shortly before the end of his life, in which he clearly shows with a central quotation from Beethoven that “national” does not have to mean “nationalistic” by any means.

Aus estnischen Melodien schuf Eduard Tubin mit seinem ‚Prélude Solennel‘ ein identitätsstiftendes musikalisches Bekenntnis zu seinem Heimatland, bevor er 1944 vor der russischen Invasion nach Schweden floh.

In der „Neuen Welt“ wehmutsvoll an das heimatliche Böhmen denkend, schrieb Antonín Dvořák im Winter 1894 / 95 eines der beliebtesten Cellokonzerte aller Zeiten. In Oldenburg spielt den Solopart Alban Gerhardt, den ‚The Guardian‘ als „einen der weit und breit feinsinnigsten Cellisten“ rühmte: „ausdrucksstark, ohne Effekthascherei und edel.“

In den 1880er-Jahren kämpfte die Pariser Société nationale de Musique um einen gehobenen französischen Musikstil in Abgrenzung zu wachsender „Décadence“. In diesem Sinne schrieb auch Société-Mitglied César Franck kurz vor Lebensende seine einzige Sinfonie, in der er mit einem zentralen Beethovenzitat deutlich zeigt, dass „national“ noch lange nicht „nationalistisch“ bedeuten muss.
