The Italian composer Francesco Chilea (1866-1950) is a typical representative of the Italian opera school from the end of the IXX and the beginning of the XX century. For the famous Teatro Lyrico in Milan, he composed Adriana Lecouvreur in 1902, the opera with which he became world famous. The libretto by Arturo Colautti follows the melodrama of Eugene Scribe, which recreates the last year of the life of the famous French dramatic actress Adriana Lecouvreur (1692-1730). Chile's masterpiece is a model of veristic musical drama, close to the aesthetics of Mascani, Leoncavallo and Puccini. In this work, Francesco Chilea appears as a subtle psychologist, charming lyricist and playwright, with a particularly expressive sense of the stage. The great Enrico Caruso played Maurizio at the bravura premiere of the Teatro Lyrico on November 6, 1902.

In Bulgaria this original work has been staged only 3 times - in 1933 in Sofia, in 1971 in Plovdiv and in 1988 again in Sofia, with Raina Kabaivanska in the lead role. Varna's "Adriana Lecouvreur" at the Opera in the Summer Theater 2015, starring Tsvetelina Vasileva, is the fourth production in the history of Bulgarian opera.
