Verdi's most spectacular opera, composed at the height of its fame on behalf of the Khedive and Egyptian viceroy Ismael Pascha in 1870/1871, tells an impossible love story in times of war between the enslaved Ethiopian king's daughter Aida, the Egyptian general Radamès and the pharaoh's daughter Amneris. Love, jealousy, patriotism and a sense of duty shape the conflicts of these three protagonists.



But the historical places, people and their actions do not function in Aida as ancient finds of archaeological research, but as living metaphors. They formulate the critical condition of the individual in the midst of encrusted systems and competing power relations, the disorientation of the individual in a hectically developing European humanity at the end of the 19th century, gripped by the fever of expansion and progress. Flanked by immortal opera melodies such as “Celeste Aida” or the Triumphal March, Verdi's unique psycho thriller culminates in the touching sacrificial and love death of the heroine.
