It was not until his encounter with ballet master Noverr and librettist Ranier de Calzabigi that led him to think about the opera genre and subsequently led to the creation of masterful reform operas, which are still alive today and one of the best that Gluck has created. He created a modern musical drama from the already surviving form of the Italian opera series, in which the music is closely connected with the plot of the opera and its libretto. He wrote that he "tried to return music to its own task, which is to encourage the poem to intensify the expression of emotions." His first Reform (and still the most performed) opera was Orpheus and Eurydice, followed by several other major works. Alceste was written in 1767. Its story takes place several years after the Trojan War in Thessaly, Greece, where the wife of the terminally ill King Admett sacrifices himself for his recovery and is about to die.
