Haydn wrote 104 symphonies. Mozart 41. Beethoven had already grown into the genre of the symphony as if it were a mature genre in which the two great masters of his time had already shown almost everything. Beethoven, a man who was always serious and wanted to impress with all his might, knew how much he would cut into the wood if he too appeared before the audience with a symphony. His first symphony, although it shows many similarities to Haydn's symphonies, already angered the critics with its opening chord. However, if they only knew what was to come in Beethoven's oeuvre... According to some, Bach is the god, Mozart is the angel and Beethoven is the man who must fight his way to heaven by his own strength. There is a trace of this struggle in Beethoven's oeuvre, which in the IX. he reaches his goal, heaven, in a symphony. This struggling path, this sound, this symphonic ideal, and this approach to art became the alpha and omega of later authors. Beethoven wrote only nine symphonies, but this culminated the genre made great by Haydn and Mozart.

Haydn 104 szimfóniát írt. Mozart 41-et. Beethoven már úgy nőtt bele a szimfónia műfajába, mint ami egy kiforrott műfaj, melyben korának két nagy mestere már szinte mindent megmutatott. Beethoven, a mindig komoly és minden erejével hatni kívánó ember tehát tudta, mekkora fába vágja a fejszéjét, ha ő is szimfóniával lép a közönség elé. Első szimfóniája, bár sok rokonságot mutat Haydn szimfóniáival, már kezdőakkordjával is magára haragította a kritikusokat. Pedig, ha tudták volna, hogy mi jön még a Beethoven életműben… Egyesek szerint Bach az isten, Mozart az angyal és Beethoven az ember, akinek saját erejéből kell felküzdenie magát a mennybe. Beethoven életművében nyoma van ennek a küzdelemnek, mely a IX. szimfóniában éri el célját, a mennyországot. Ez a küzdelmes út, ez a hangzás, ez a szimfonikus ideál, ez a művészetszemlélet pedig alfája és omegája lett a későbbi szerzőknek. Beethoven csak kilenc szimfóniát írt, de ez betetőzte a Haydn és Mozart által naggyá tett műfajt.
