Umberto Giordano (1867-1948) is an Italian composer, an excellent representative of verism. After completing his studies in Naples, he mainly composed operas, the best known of which are Fedora and André Chénier. The latter draws its theme from the fate of the poet executed during the French Revolution.

The country aristocrats continued their old way of life even after the outbreak of the Paris Revolution. André Chénier, the poet, appears at the party of the Counts of Coigny. One of his poems outrages the aristocratic society as it speaks out against the oppression of the people. Gérard, the butler, storms into the party at the head of the rebellious peasants, so he is immediately dismissed. After the victory of the revolution, the poet falls in love with Countess Coigny. Madeleine is also loved by Gérard, who in the meantime became the secretary of the republic. The two men attack each other with swords on one occasion, and Gérard is wounded. Chénier is brought before a revolutionary court, the mover of the conceptual trial is his rival, Gérard. Madeleine can do everything to save the poet's life. In vain. André Chénier is sentenced to death, the countess
voluntarily follows him to the guillotine.

Umberto Giordano (1867-1948) olasz zeneszerző, a verizmus kiváló képviselője. Nápolyi tanulmányai befejeztével főleg operákat komponált, melyek közül a legismertebbek a Fedora és az André Chénier. Az utóbbi a francia forradalom alatt kivégzett költő sorsából meríti témáját.

A vidéki arisztokraták még tovább folytatják régi életmódjukat a párizsi forradalom kitörése után is. Coigny grófék estélyén megjelenik André Chénier, a költő. Egyik verse felháborítja az arisztokrata társaságot, mivel a nép elnyomása ellen emel szót. Gérard, a komornyik lázadó parasztok élén ront be az estélyre, ezért azonnal elbocsátják. A forradalom győzelme után a költő szerelembe esik Coigny grófnővel. Madeleine-t Gérard is szereti, akiből közben a köztársaság titkára lett. A két férfi egy alkalommal karddal ront egymásra, és Gérard megsebesül. Chénier-t forradalmi bíróság elé állítják, a koncepciós per mozgatója riválisa, Gérard. Madeleine mindenre képes a költő életének megmentéséért. Hiába. André Chénier-t halálra ítélik, a grófnő
önként követi a guillotine alá.
