The culmination of the 2022/2023 theater season at the National Theater Opera is the premiere of Gaetano Donizetti's opera Anna Bolena. After the success of Roberto Devereux's opera production about the English Queen Elizabeth I, the NDKE Opera is preparing a semi-stage production of the next part of the magnificent Tudor trilogy, in which the captivating story of Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, comes to life.

Svetová premiéra opery Gaetana Donizettiho Anna Bolena, ktorá sa uskutočnila v roku 1830 v milánskom divadle Teatro Carcano, bola medzníkom v skladateľovej tvorbe a otvorila mu cestu k medzinárodnej sláve. Príbeh opery je inšpirovaný historickými okolnosťami z Anglicka v roku 1536. Po tom, ako sa kráľ Henrich VIII. rozviedol so svojou prvou manželkou, aby si mohol vziať Annu Boleynovú, sa po troch rokoch rozhodne zbaviť aj jej. Kráľova priazeň sa obrátila ku kráľovninej dvornej dáme - jej rivalke Jane Seymour a preto ľstivo a zákerne obviní svoju manželku z nevery, ktorej sa mala dopustiť s priateľom z mladosti lordom Percym. Obaja su osúdení na smrť, pred popravou Anna odpúšťa...

Gaetano Donizetti a libretista Felice Romani chceli priniesť na scénu viac ako historické fakty: milostný príbeh, lásku, zradu a útrapy hlavnej hrdinky. Renesancia belcanta, ktorá začala v 2. polovici 20. storočia, umožnila publiku spoznať tragickú postavu Anny Boleny, ktorú odvtedy spievali mnohé veľké sopranistky - spomeňme aspoň Beverly Sills, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé a Editu Gruberovú.

Po úspešnom uvedení opery Roberto Devereux, ktorej hlavnou predstaviteľkou je kráľovná Alžbeta I., pokračuje Opera NDKE v tudorovskej trilógii Gaetana Donizettiho príbehom jej matky Anny Boleynovej v opere Anna Bolena, ktorú uvedieme v poloscénickej podobe.

The world premiere of Gaetano Donizetti´s opera Anne Boleyn took place in 1830 at Teatro Carcano, Milan. It was a milestone in the composer´s work and opened the way to international fame for him. Opera´s story took inspiration from historical circumstances in England in 1536.

King Henry VIII divorced his first wife so he could marry Anne Boleyn. Three years later, he got rid of her too. King´s favour turned to the queen´s lady-in-waiting and her rival, Jane Seymor. Therefore he cunningly and maliciously accuses his wife of infidelity that she allegedly committed with her childhood friend Lord Percy. Both were sentenced to death. Before execution, Anne forgives. . .

Gaetano Donizetti and librettist Felice Romani wanted to bring to the stage more than historical facts: romance, love, betrayal and hardships of the main character. The Renaissance of Belcanto began in the second half of the 20th century. It allowed the audience to get to know the tragic role of Anne Boleyn. Since then, It has been sung by many great sopranos. Let´s mention Beverly Sills, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé and Edita Gruberová.

After the successful performance of the Roberto Devereux opera with the main character of Queen Elizabeth I., the Opera of the State Theatre Košice continues Gaetano Donizetti´s Tudor Trilogy with the story about her mother Anne Boleyn. We will present the opera Anne Boleyn in semi-staged form.
