We present the opera in the Italian original with Czech subtitles

On October 23, 2016, the opera company will present its first premiere of the new season, the opera Attila by G. Verdi.

An opera in a prologue and three acts, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and Temistocle Solera, based on the play Attila, König der Hunnen (by Zacharias Werner).

Verdi's choral opera is about the ruler of the Huns - King Attila, who plundered a large part of Europe in the 5th century. Verdi clearly depicts the liberation of Italy in a libretto that is very loosely based on historical facts. The historical subject is enriched with a love plot and a desire for revenge.

Attila was short, O-legged, not handsome—an Asian type with a scanty beard, flat nose, and darker skin color. His face was full of scars that the warrior had earned in battle, but also made himself to intimidate the enemy with his appearance. Attila ("Daddy" in the Hun language) used ordinary things - unadorned clothing, wooden utensils, etc.; he was very kind to his subjects and friends. The "Whip of God" had no moral inhibitions towards others. He had entire cities slaughtered, including women and children, human life was of no value to him. In this, Attila was no different from other warriors of his time.

On the campaign route, Attila reached the wooden city of Troyes. Bishop Lupus, famous for his participation in the mission to Britain, worked in the local church. According to Lup's biography, the bishop stood against Attila and saved his city and its inhabitants. At their meeting, the famous words were to be uttered: "I am Lupus, man of God." Attila responded forcefully in impeccable Latin: "Ego sum Attila, flagellum Dei" (I am Attila, scourge of God.)

At the time of planning the expedition against Byzantium (year 453), Attila is holding a wedding with his seventeenth wife, the young Germanic girl Ildico. Attila is found in a pool of blood the morning after the wedding night. It is possible that the young Ildico killed the aging Attila with a hidden knife, but historians say it is more likely that the drunken Attila suffocated from a nosebleed.

Attila is said to have been buried with a huge treasure. His body was placed in a triple coffin, the first of gold, the second of silver, and the third of iron. The Huns diverted the flow of the river (most often thought of as the Tisza) to the site of the grave and killed all the slaves who worked on the construction of the grave. The inscription "Fulgur conditum" - buried thunderbolt - is intended to discourage a possible finder from opening the coffin.

Nowadays, we see the current political topic in the wider dimension of Europe as a fundamental conflict of a clash of two cultures. The original premiere at the La Fenice theater in Venice on March 17, 1846 was a resounding success, and the opera's patriotic theme drew the audience into stormy, politically motivated speeches. Critics, unlike the audience, showed less approval and criticized the composer's militant way of writing. Rossini called Verdi "musicista con l'elmo" (musician with a helmet). In Attila, elaborate choruses, impressive melodies, new compositional elements against the background of the "old" style and effective instrumentation attract attention. In 1991, the opera in Opava gave the very successful Czechoslovak premiere of this work.

Operu uvádíme v italském originále s českými titulky

Operní soubor uvede 23. října 2016 svou první premiéru nové sezóny, operu Attila od G. Verdiho.

Opera o prologu a třech dějstvích, libreto Francesco Maria Piave a Temistocle Solera, podle divadelní hry Attila, König der Hunnen (autor Zacharias Werner).

Verdiho sborová opera pojednává o vládci Hunů – králi Attilovi, který v 5. století plenil velkou část Evropy. Verdi zřetelně vykresluje osvobození Itálie na libreto, které se velice volně opírá o historická fakta. Historický námět je obohacen o milostnou zápletku a touhu po pomstě.

Attila byl malé postavy, nohy do „O“, nebyl hezký – asijský typ s chudým vousem, plochým nosem a tmavší barvou kůže. Jeho obličej byl plný jizev, které válečník získal v boji, ale také si je vyráběl sám, aby svým vzhledem zastrašoval nepřítele. Attila (v hunské řeči „tatíček“) používal obyčejné věci – oděv bez ozdob, dřevěné nádobí atd.; ke svým poddaným i přátelům se choval velice vlídně. K ostatním neměl „Bič boží“ žádné morální zábrany. Nechal vyvraždit celá města, včetně žen a dětí, lidský život neměl pro něj žádnou cenu. V tomto se Attila nelišil od jiných válečníků své doby.

Na trase tažení se Attila dostal k dřevěnému městu Troyes. V místním kostele působil biskup Lupus, proslulý svou účastí na misi do Británie. Podle Lupova životopisu se biskup postavil proti Attilovi a zachránil své město a jeho obyvatele. Na jejich setkání měla zaznít proslulá slova: „Jsem Lupus, člověk Boží.“ Attila rázně odpověděl bezvadnou latinou: „Ego sum Attila, flagellum Dei“ (Já jsem Attila, bič boží.)

V době plánování výpravy proti Byzanci (rok 453) pořádá Attila svatbu se svou sedmnáctou manželkou, mladou germánskou dívkou Ildico. Attila je ráno po svatební noci nalezen v kaluži krvi. Je možné, že mladičká Ildico zabila stárnoucího Attilu ukrytým nožem, ale dle historiků je pravděpodobnější, že se opilý Attila udusil při krvácení z nosu.

Attila byl údajně pohřben s obrovským pokladem. Jeho tělo bylo uložené do trojité rakve, první ze zlata, druhá ze stříbra a třetí ze železa. Hunové na místo hrobu svedli tok řeky (nejčastěji se uvažuje o Tise) a povraždili všechny otroky, kteří na stavbě hrobu pracovali. Případného nálezce má odradit od otevření rakve nápis „Fulgur conditum“ – zakopaný hrom.

V dnešní době vidíme aktuální politické téma v širším rozměru Evropy jako základní konflikt střetu dvou kultur. Původní premiéra v divadle La Fenice v Benátkách 17. března 1846 slavila úspěch a vlastenecký námět opery strhoval publikum k bouřlivým, politicky motivovaným, projevům. Kritika na rozdíl od publika projevila méně souhlasu a vytýkala skladateli militantní způsob psaní. Rossini nazval Verdiho „musicista con l´elmo“ (hudebník s helmou). V Attilovi upoutávají pozornost vypracované sbory, působivé melodie, nové kompoziční prvky na pozadí „starého“ stylu a efektní instrumentace. V roce 1991 uvedla opera v Opavě velmi úspěšnou československou premiéru tohoto díla.
