Eines der radikalsten und berühmtesten Musiktheaterwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts kehrt in einer Neuinszenierung von Barrie Kosky und unter der musikalischen Leitung von Generalmusikdirektor Ainārs Rubiķis auf die Bühne der Komischen Oper Berlin zurück – mit Ausnahmetenor Allan Clayton als Jim Mahoney und Publikumsliebling Nadja Mchantaf als Jenny Hill.

Drei Gauner gründen auf der Flucht vor der Polizei mitten in der Wüste die Stadt Mahagonny. Es soll ihr gelobtes Land sein, ein Ort der Utopie und der unbegrenzten Sünde – denn nichts Geringeres als der Verkauf von Liebe und Alkohol soll für den Fluss des Geldes sorgen. Fressen, Lieben, Boxen, Saufen! Doch wehe, es bleibt kein Geld, um die Zeche zu bezahlen … Menschen, die vor Sklaverei, Verbrechen oder Armut fliehen, eine leere Wüste, gefüllt mit Träumen und Sehnsüchten, apokalyptische Naturkatastrophen, strenge Regeln und wollüstige Exzesse.

Zeitgleich zu Arnold Schönbergs alttestamentlichen Oper Moses und Aron entstand mit Brechts und Weills Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny ein Werk, dessen Bezüge zu den Büchern Moses versteckter, aber letztlich doch unverkennbar sind. Oper und Anti-Oper zugleich, thematisiert Mahagonny die Fallstricke der menschlichen Existenz anhand biblischer Bilder – getragen und vorangetrieben von der Musik Kurt Weills, die in ihrer Verarbeitung zahlreicher ganz unterschiedlicher Einflüsse und Stilrichtungen der Zeit ebenso unvergleichlich wie unnachahmlich ist.

One of the most radical and most famous music theater works of the 20th century returns to the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin in a new production by Barrie Kosky and under the musical direction of General Music Director Ainārs Rubiķis - with exceptional tenor Allan Clayton as Jim Mahoney and audience favorite Nadja Mchantaf as Jenny Hill.

Three crooks found the city of Mahagonny in the middle of the desert while fleeing the police. It should be their promised land, a place of utopia and unlimited sin - because nothing less than the sale of love and alcohol should ensure the flow of money. Eat, love, box, drink! But alas, there is no money left to foot the bill... people fleeing slavery, crime or poverty, an empty desert filled with dreams and desires, apocalyptic natural disasters, strict rules and voluptuous excesses.

At the same time as Arnold Schönberg's Old Testament opera Moses und Aron , Brecht's and Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny was writtena work whose references to the books of Moses are more obscure but ultimately unmistakable. Opera and anti-opera at the same time, Mahagonny addresses the pitfalls of human existence using biblical images - carried and driven by Kurt Weill's music, which is as incomparable as it is inimitable in its processing of numerous very different influences and styles of the time.
