Aurora, compuesta por Héctor Panizza con libreto de Luigi Illica –el mismo de La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly y Andrea Chénier– es, además de una gran ópera italiana del romanticismo –de hecho fue estrenada en Buenos Aires en ese idioma– una obra de poderoso simbolismo. Tal como su título anuncia, hay allí una alusión al nacimiento, al comienzo de algo nuevo, imposible de soslayar. Su tema, con el trasfondo de una historia de amor contrariado, cuenta una aurora, la de la independencia americana. Pero, además, fue estrenada en la temporada inaugural del edificio actual del Teatro Colón, en 1908. Director del estreno de Turandot en su versión completada por Alfano, y de Francesca de Rimini, entre muchas obras de comienzos del siglo XX, asistente de Toscanini y autor de otras tres óperas, Ettore Panizza (así se lo conocía en Italia) había nacido en Buenos Aires y su primer maestro fue su padre, un cellista de la orquesta del viejo Colón. Para el libreto de Aurora, Illica contó con la colaboración del argentino Héctor Cipriano Quesada, y la versión en castellano –traducida por Josué Quesada y Ángel Petittaf en 1943– fue estrenada en 1945, durante el gobierno de facto del General Edelmiro Farrell y con la presencia de su vicepresidente, el Coronel Juan Domingo Perón. El aria de tenor del final del segundo acto, en que el protagonista canta a la vez a su amada (Aurora, la hija del jefe realista) y a la “aurora que surge en el cielo de la patria”, fue convertida ese año, por decreto, en canción escolar obligatoria.

Aurora, composed by Héctor Panizza with a libretto by Luigi Illica – the same as La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Andrea Chénier – is, in addition to being a great Italian romantic opera – in fact it was premiered in Buenos Aires in that language – a work of powerful symbolism. As its title announces, there is an allusion to the birth, to the beginning of something new, impossible to avoid. Its theme, against the background of a story of disaffected love, tells of a dawn, that of American independence. But, in addition, it was premiered in the inaugural season of the current building of the Teatro Colón, in 1908. Director of the premiere of Turandot in its version completed by Alfano, and of Francesca de Rimini, among many works from the beginning of the 20th century, Toscanini's assistant and author of three other operas, Ettore Panizza (as he was known in Italy) was born in Buenos Aires and his first teacher was his father, a cellist in the old Columbus orchestra. For the libretto of Aurora, Illica had the collaboration of the Argentine Héctor Cipriano Quesada, and the Spanish version – translated by Josué Quesada and Ángel Petittaf in 1943 – was premiered in 1945, during the de facto government of General Edelmiro Farrell and with the presence of his vice president, Colonel Juan Domingo Perón. The tenor aria at the end of the second act, in which the protagonist sings both to his beloved (Aurora, the royalist chief's daughter) and to the “aurora that arises in the sky of the country,” was converted that year, by decree, in mandatory school song.
